Fanhood: It’s bigger than footballNovember 27, 2009

As fans, we are true fanatics of our favorite players. We idolize them by wearing their jerseys, keeping up with their stats, defending them in barbershop and message board arguments. But what happens when our favorite players are snatched from us by death? First there is shock, then mourning, but we must never forget our favorite players.
As a fan, we help carry the legacy of fallen players. Just because they are gone doesn’t mean you stop rocking their jerseys, playing with them in the video games, or arguing on their behalf on talk radio, barbershop banter, or internet message boards. When a fan shows love to a fallen player whether directly or indirectly and a players’ family or friend takes notice that player lives on, he’s still appreciated, and most importantly it is known that he is not forgotten. The adulation from fans let’s a players family know that all his hard work and achievements were not done for nothing. They were looked up to and respected by society. We must also remember that our favorite players are also human. So when our players make a mistake on the football field, be grateful that they are here, because there are thousands of families, friends, teammates, coaches, and fans that wish their favorite players were still around today.
Jasper Howard, Marquis Cooper, Will Bleakley, and Corey Smith were all taken from us this year. Smith was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He played college ball at North Carolina State. Smith also spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Detriot Lions. Cooper was drafted by the Buccaneers in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He played college ball at Washington. Cooper also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburg Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Oakland Raiders. Bleakley was known to his friends as a kind and determined young man. Bleakley worked his way from being a walk-on for the University of South Florida football team to a scholarship starter. Howard was a starting junior cornerback for the Connecticut Huskies before his death. He played as a true freshman. He also started all 12 games as a true sophomore in 2008 and led the Big East in punt return average. In his last game,
Howard had a career-high 11 tackles and forced a fumble he recovered in to seal the win in a 38-25 victory over Louisville.
