5 reasons not to trade #5March 31, 2010

NFL/

Donovan McNabb is going through it right now. I don’t care how tough skinned he may be, but the thought of the organization that you’ve been with for eleven years wanting to trade you is not peaceful. McNabb has played his heart for Philly, it hasn’t always been pretty and it’s been quite bad at times to be honest. Envy is when you pay attention to others’ gifts and fail to be grateful for your own. Look at it this way Philly fans, you could have drafted Cade McNown, Tim Couch, or Akili Smith in that 1999 draft. Philly fans need to realize that not every quarterback is going to be Peyton Manning and the Eagles’ misfortunes over the past few years aren’t all McNabb’s fault. I’d put money on it that most people would say that Manning is a better quarterback than Tom Brady and I’d agree, but Brady was on the better teams which is why he has three Super Bowl rings. Andy Reid and the Eagles’ management need to field some of the blame for the Eagles’ lack of a Super Bowl title. There are several reasons not to trade McNabb, but here are five:

1. Kevin Kolb is not the answer. Why is everyone getting so worked up over his back to back 300 yard passing games. The NFL is now a passing league, in fact 98 times last year a quarterback threw for over 300 yards. Let’s break down Kolb’s 300 yard passing games. The first one was for 391 against the Saints. He went 31 for 51 and threw two tds and three picks. No seems to mention the three picks or that the it was against the Saints who are not exactly the defensive juggernaut. The most important thing not mentioned is that those 391 passing yards only got the Eagles 22 points and they lost the game.

The second game was against the Chiefs. Let’s be real, any starting caliber NFL quarterback should throw for 300 yards against the Chiefs.

Kolb’s pedigree is not from the SEC, Big 12, or Pac 10…it’s from Conference USA. Come on man, if the Eagles are ready to rid themselves of McNabb for Kolb then they need to get ready to start losing. Not saying Kolb can’t win, but I know for certain he will not be winning next year.

2. Donovan McNabb has been leading the Eagles for 11 years. I know the team is going to be handed over to a new leader sooner or later, but the Eagles are still a contender with McNabb, if they let him go, they’ll basically be handing over the reigns to a rookie QB. I know Aaron Rodgers stepped in quite nicely after Favre left, but Rodgers was a first round pick that in hindsight should have been the first overall pick instead of Alex Smith. Kolb was a second round risk.

3. You Don’t appreciate what you have until it’s gone
. Jerry Rice, Darren Sharper, Brett Favre are all hall of fame players that would have loved to end their careers with the teams they grew their legend with but those teams felt they were over the hill and not worth their salaries. Jerry Rice went on to go to another Super Bowl with the Raiders while the 49ers watched from across the Bay in agony. The Packers thought Darren Sharper was too old, then he became a Viking and proved them wrong. The Vikings thought Sharper was too old, and then he became a Saint and helped defeat them in the NFC championship game while being on his way to leading the league in interceptions and winning a Super Bowl ring. We all know how the Packers felt about Favre. His stint with the Jets wasn’t the best, but this past year with the Vikings was one of his best and he beat the Packers twice on national TV. Don’t do it to yourselves Philly, please don’t.

4. Money is the root for all of this evil.
If McNabb weren’t due to receive a $6.2 million dollar roster bonus, then I don’t think I’d be writing this article. He’s also in the last year of his contract and the Eagles probably fear that if they don’t trade him and he walks after this season then they’d get nothing for him. Understandable, but let’s be real, why would McNabb bolt? He’s stated many times that he wants to be an Eagle and even if he were a free agent, he’d sign with the Eagles even another team was offering him more money. The Eagles can end all of their fears for a McNabb free agency exit by simply offering him a new contract or asking him to restructure his deal. If they really wanted to keep McNabb they’d explore these options. Yes, Donovan is 34, but he has at least three to four good years left in him.

5. It’s a team game. When I say team, I mean team from the water boys to the front office and all things in between. Has management put McNabb in the best position to win? We’ll they tried with T.O. so we can’t blame that on them. But Andy Reid’s lack of a running game has hurt McNabb. It’s easy to scheme for a team when you know they are not going to run the ball. Back to the front office, you already have an explosive receiver in DeSean Jackson so why turn around the next year and draft the exact same type of wide receiver in Jeremy Maclin? Through it all, McNabb has still prevailed as an elite quarterback in this league.

I still think the Eagles will figure out a way to get rid of McNabb, but I think it’s going to be one of the biggest mistakes they ever make.

That’s all I got,

Ricky Writer
