Derrick Morgan vs. Jason Pierre-PaulApril 15, 2010

Football is changing and so are the position. Gone are the days when a defensive end was a big lumbering guy that was really un-athletic. Now a days you have the likes of Julius Peppers, Jared Allen, Mario Williams etc. These guys are just pure freaks of nature with size and speed. This year’s draft class is nothing short of phenomenal athletes that happen to stand 6’5″ plus and weigh 270 plus and can jump out of the gym.
Derrick Morgan

Vitals: 6′3″ 266 lbs.
Pass Rush: When he’s on, he’s on.
Hands: May be the most balanced DE in his class. Great use of his hands.
Run Support: Tends to play high and needs to improve his leverage.
Versatility: While very good against the run and pass, he only projects to be a 4-3 end.
1st Step: Passing offense in college will help him adjust to the NFL schemes.
Motor: He gets after it. Great motor after the play eludes him.
Comparison: Slower/Bigger Dwight Freeney
Pros: As well-rounded a defensive end as you’ll see coming out of college. Most kids are great run stoppers or pass rushers, but this kid is great at both.
Cons: While he plays with a great motor, he is guilty from loafing from time to time. He doesn’t jump off the page athletically either.
Overall: Morgan is a great prospect with the size and speed you need. He’s the prototypical 4-3 defensive end. He must refine his game, and be more consistent but he’s almost there.
Jason Pierre-Paul

Vitals: 6′5″ 270 lbs.
Pass Rush: As polished a pass rusher that you’ll see coming out of college.
Hands: While his hands are fluid in pass rush, they aren’t as developed in the run.
Run Support: Really needs to work on this aspect of his game. May take some time.
Versatility: Projects as 4-3 DE, but after filing out his frame he could be a 3-4 as well.
1st Step: Double P has the first step of an Audi Quattro. He’s like a shark with blood in the water during passing situations.
Motor: Good motor, but needs to improve it.
Comparison: Michael Strahan
Pros: Pierre-Paul is as dangerous edge rusher as there is in this years DE class. Has the size, frame, and extensive array of moves to potentially be the best end in this years class.
Cons: Could not stop a roach from running through a living room. Honestly he may not specialize in run stopping now but give him time to fill out and work on his technique.
Overall: Pierre-Paul came out of nowhere to become one the top ends in this class. While he has some work to do before he may be an every down player in the NFL, Jason will be a house hold name next year for what he brings to the table with his pass rush. More than a few NFL QBs will get a formal introduction next year.
Who am I picking???

Pierre Paul. He gets off the rock like Michael Strahan. When his run support catches up with his pass rush he’ll be a top 5 DE for a long time, period.
Ya Boy,
Lina
