McCoy vs. SuhApril 15, 2010
Isn’t this why you are here? For McCoy vs. Suh! Bottom line these are the two best players in this year’s draft. The game of football is played from the inside out. Centers, Guards, Defensive Tackles, and Nose Guards rule the world in football. Sure QBs get all the love but if it weren’t for the men in the middle nothing else on the field would happen.
Gerald McCoy
Vitals: 6′4″ 295 lbs.
Push: McCoy has great push, but can get washed against the run at times.
Pass Rush: McCoy is an elite pass rusher at the DT position really reminds me of Tommie Harris in this area of his game.
Hands: Vicious, nasty, and ninja like. McCoy really engages and disengages with his hand like few DTs can, in his pass rush he seemingly is like a whirling dervish coming off the edge.
Flexibility: McCoy would excell in the 5 technique (3-4) or the 3 technique (4-3) defensive scheme.
Disruptor: This kid is going to be a major problem for offenses. Should be a 10 year guy with a great career disrupting plays.
Comparison: A poor man’s Tommie Harris
Pros: This kid will be an instant star in the NFL with his pass rush skill set. McCoy is ready straight out the box no assembly required.
Cons: Relativley weak performance on the bench in the combine and has some detractors thinking he does not have the upper body strength to battle grown men in the NFL trenches.
Overall: Probably more of a finesse DT than Suh, but do not sleep in this kid. His pass rush and get off are superior and whoever takes him in the 2010 draft is getting a keeper.
Ndamukong Suh
Vitals: 6′3″ 307 lbs.
Push: Like no other DT I’ve ever seen. Not like a Ted Washington type. This kid is always under control and always deep in the backfield.
Pass Rush: Suh has a great pass rush, but it is not an elite one. I think this side of his game will show in the NFL.
Hands: Suh really uses leverage to control one or two blockers and gets off blocks very quickly. Suh has a tendency to maul offensive lineman.
Flexibility: Would excel in the 5 technique (3-4) or the 3 technique (4-3) defensive scheme.
Disruptor: Ndamukong is the originator of Stupid Motor Inc. Teams have to change their whole game plan to stop this guy. I don’t think I have see a guy so physically dominant with a nose for the ball like Suh. Thank god I don’t play center or guard in the NFL.
Comparison: A yoked up Kevin Wiliams
Pros:Smart, instinctive has a knack for getting to the ball early and often. Suh just dominates and never ever looks uncomfortable on film when engaged with blockers. Two words. Total Dominance.
Cons: Has had some durability history with his knees at Nebraska, otherwise this kid is a solid bet for a long career filled with many pro bowls.
Overall: Best player in this year’s draft hands down!
Who am I picking???
At the end of the day, Suh is the more polished DT, but you cannot knock McCoy because he is right behind Ndamukong as far as abilities are concerned. I think both are first year starters and McCoy has the better pass rush. I think it will come down to what system each is put in to determine who will be the better player in time. The reality of it is I would hate to make a decision between the two, so Suh me…literally.
