The Miami vs. FSU series or the FSU vs. Miami series has always been about big time talent big time coaches and big time finishes. The coaches in this rivalry have been big time to name a few Bowden, Johnson, Erickson, and Davis have roamed the sidelines at their respective schools. It would take a 40 GB flash drive to hold the names of all the elite talent that has went head to head in this matchup through the years.
The finishes in the series have been elite as well there’s been Wide Right I, II and III as well as Wide Left I and a Rally in Tally. In 1991, Gerry Thomas missed a field goal with 29 seconds left, and No. 1 FSU lost to No. 2 Miami 17-16. The next year, Dan Mowrey missed on the final play and UM won 19-16. In 2000, Matt Munyon’s last-second field goal sailed…”Wide Right III” the end zone scoreboard showed and Miami won 27-24. Two years later, Xavier Beitia drove a last-second field goal wide left, and the ‘Canes held on 28-27. Last season, Jarmon Fortson couldn’t hang onto a low pass in the end zone that would have given the Noles a win.
On Saturday Night the ABC telecast will continue one of the most fabled series in college football. I am still trying to figure out which school started the stomping on the other schools logo tradition? Rumor has it that FSU is the brainchild of one of college football’s most disrespectful acts.
Jacory Harris vs Christian Ponder is a big matchup in this game. Harris outplayed Ponder last year in Tallahassee as Miami earned the win. Will Harris return the favor? Florida State’s run game has improved dramatically averaging more than 200 yard a game since the Noles implosion at Oklahoma? Is this a result of weaker competition like Wake Forest and Virginia? Saturday will provide your answer as Miami’s defense led by Sean Spence and Allen Bailey has been nasty all year. Ponder has really directed the Noles offense beautifully outside of the Oklahoma game where everything went bad for the Noles, I do not see him putting FSU in a bad position in this game. However, on the other side it is well known that Harris has either been brilliant with the ball or very willing to donate extra possessions to the other team in the form of nicely gift wrapped interceptions.
You honestly just don’t know which Harris will show up. The Noles defense has been up and down all year, but they do have the horses to compete with Miami that is for sure. FSU standout, Greg Reid, is not having as good a year as he had in his freshman year, but locking up Leonard Hankerson would go a long way towards an upswing in the CB’s sophomore year.
If you have been wondering why I have not been willing to commit to either side like I usually do with reckless abandon it is because the last 6 games in this series have been decided by 8 points or less. Miami and FSU always goes down to the last moment, as stars like Peter Warrick and Terrell Buckley are made and much like the afore mentioned martyrs like Matt Munyon and Dan Mowery. It will be a good one down in Miami Gardens Saturday night, but I’m taking Miami based mainly on home field advantage 34-27 over the Noles.
