A Tale of Two Vastly Different QuarterbacksOctober 15, 2010

Two months ago, this game billed as a showdown between two Big Twelve rivals. Now it’s much, much more.
After two straight losses for the now unranked Longhorns, this game isn’t about pushing the panic button for Texas – that button has already been depressed. This game is about salvaging a respectable season; a third straight loss and Austin, TX might rip itself to pieces in a frenzy of fear and indignation.
Meanwhile, No. 5 Nebraska has a chance to put a stamp on its return to national prominence in this, its last year in the Big Twelve. The running game is back at Nebraska (can we please erase the sacrilegious Bill Callahan West Coast Offense Experiment from our collective memory?). It’s not the pure option offense of Tom Osborne’s golden years but instead the zone read-option centered around Freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez. And it’s potent – the Huskers rank second in the country in rushing yards per game with 337.2. Martinez has been held to fewer than 100 yards in just one game this season, and last week set the Nebraska rushing record by piling up 241 yards against Kansas State on 15 carries, including four touchdowns (he added a 79-yard touchdown pass). The Nebraska offense likens to a well-oiled war machine right now.
Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert is a different type of player in a far more dubious situation. More of a classic throwing quarterback, the sophomore has had mixed results in his first year filling the big shoes of the departed Colt McCoy (who will undergo what will likely be a brutal trial-by-fire NFL debut against the Steelers carnivorous defense this week). He has completed 63% of his passes so far this year, but for just 1,551 yards with a 4:5 touchdown-interception ratio. He’s a talented kid, but learning on the job in the Big Twelve is no easy task, and going up against the Black Shirts in Lincoln in a major gut-check game isn’t exactly the ideal situation for a guy still learning the ropes.
If all that sounds like it adds up to a surefire Nebraska win, keep these two statistics in mind: First, Mack Brown’s Texas teams are 12-0 after facing Oklahoma. Second, and far more importantly, Texas ranks second in the Big Twelve in rushing defense, giving up just 104 yards per game. That defense will certainly be put to the test by Martinez and backfield mates Roy Helu, Jr. and Rex Burkhead, but the Longhorns will be playing with the fury of an animal backed in a corner. If Gilbert can avoid mistakes and the Texas defense can bend without breaking, this could be a close one.
