Two months ago this looked like a showdown between two juggernauts fighting for supremacy not just for the NFC North, but of the entire NFC.
Times change. And quickly.
For the Vikings, everything has gone downhill since Brett Favre ended his annual retirement. Every week since has turned into a drama on and off the field for the Vikings, who, after starting 1-3 (they’re 2-3 heading into this weekend) face an uphill climb to the playoffs and the unpleasant specter of being in the national spotlight – not for good reasons – on a continuing basis.
Meanwhile, after back-to-back overtime losses the Packers are sitting at 3-3 and don’t look half as scary as they did just two weeks ago. A supposedly unstoppable offense paired with an above average defense was supposed to make them one of the best teams in the NFC, but a rash of injuries on both sides of the ball (Ryan Grant and JerMichael Finley are done for the year and Clay Matthews Jr.’s presence was sorely missed in those losses to the Redskins and the Dolphins) has suddenly made a postseason berth less than certain.
The Vikings have their own injury issues. They sorely miss Sidney Rice, and it is unclear when he will be back. His absence prompted the Vikings to trade for Randy Moss, but he’s learning a new offense on the fly and he can’t be counted on to be a reliable factor.
One player the Vikings miss possibly more than anyone else isn’t hurt and isn’t even on their team anymore. Chester Taylor was invaluable in the third-down back role and was a great compliment to Adrian Peterson, and the Vikings didn’t miss a beat when he entered the game – he’s actually a superior receiver out of the backfield and stronger in pass protection than Peterson. Now the Vikings are stuck with the plodding Toby Gerhart and the small, inexperienced Albert Young in relief. Neither is nearly the player that Taylor is, and if Peterson goes down the Vikings’ ship is sunk.
So much of this season for Minnesota now rests on Brett Favre’s battered psyche and his aching elbow. How much of a distraction will his sexual harassment scandal be going forward? Even on the field he does not look like a man enjoying himself right now, and his passion for the game has always been his lifeblood. And how will the tendinitis in his throwing arm impact his ability to make throws? It cost them the Jets game and if it flares up at inopportune times in the future, it could prove costly. While both teams are struggling right now, the Packers seem more likely to pull things together over the course of the regular season. They are more talented and deeper and don’t have any major drama.
The opposite is true for the Vikings across the board, and they can’t afford a loss this week. A 2-4 record could be devastating for the Vikings. A third consecutive loss for the Packers would leave them squarely in the middle of a mediocre NFC, but wouldn’t be a killer. But both teams badly need a victory to strengthen their confidence and to build the toughness that each will need going forward.
It seems likely that only one of these two teams will make the playoffs, and the team that wins this week will have the better chance.
