NFL Top 100: 1- 20November 8, 2010

1. Jerry Rice presented by Jon Gruden

I can’t argue with this one. His work ethic will never be touched. His summer workouts were legendary. Every important receiving record is his…1549 catches, 22,895 yards, 208 receiving touchdowns and he did it for 20 years. Plenty were bigger, stronger, and faster….but no one was better. The amazing thing is that you have to very special to be the best to ever do it and not be a QB or RB.

2. Jim Brown

1966-jim-brown-59-yrd-td-ru

He’s Godfather, Grand Marshall, OG, Yo Favorite football players’ favorite football player, etc…..He played nine years and led the league in rushing 8 of those 9 years. Left the game with a full tank…but football didn’t own him, he owned it and the league’s rushing record for 20 years.

3. Lawrence Taylor

lawrence_taylor1

He changed the game point blank. Outside Linebacker was never played the same after LT. The league hasn’t had a defensive MVP since 1986…and that was LT.

4. Joe Montana

83-00042-F

If Joe Montana and Billy D. Williams had a “Cool Contest” Billy D would forfeit citing “I know good and got damn well I ain’t cooler than Joe Montana”. I mean…31 come from behind wins…you gotta be cool. 4x Super Bowl champion doesn’t hurt either.

5. Walter Payton

Walter-Payton---Airbound-Photograph

I have no clue why his nickname was “Sweetness” it shoulda been “Disrespectful” because that’s how he was to defenders, forearm shivers, stiff arms, etc. If you tried to tackle him, lol…you got embarrassed point blank and to make matters worse, he was only 200 lbs, he wasn’t the fastest or the strongest back either. He simply was the toughest with more will than you’d ever have in six lifetimes. He played 186 straight games and played 10 seasons with 1,000 yards rushing and he retired the game as the all-time rushing leader breaking the great Jim Brown’s record.

6. Johnny Unitas

Johnny U…the legend. Had no clue he was cut by the Steelers in ’55. Umm can you say mistake. Grandfather of the Comeback, Johnny U was one of the best.

7. Reggie White

white_03

A DE that could rush the passer and stop the run. A man the could love God and tear your head off on a football field. A man who went to 13 straight pro bowls and was the league’s all-time sack leader when he retired.

8. Peyton Manning

I don’t care if he’s only won one Super Bowl…he’s got it, therefore he’s the best QB to ever play the game. He makes everyone around him better.

9. Don Hutson

The great Sean Carter once said, men lie, women lie, and numbers don’t. Hutson’s numbers are still telling the truth 65 years after his retirement as he is still No. 8 on career touchdown receptions list. He left the game holding 18 records and his 99 touchdown catches took 40 years to be eclipsed.

10. Dick Butkus

“With an intense desire to excel, Butkus embodied the spirit of the “Monsters of the Midway.” A six-time All-NFL selection and eight-time Pro Bowler, Butkus remains the standard by which middle linebackers are measured.” – NFL.com

11. Ronnie Lott

ronnie-lott

One of the hardest hitters of all-time hands down. Made the Pro Bowl 10x at three different positions – CB, FS, and SS. The boy hand hands too grabbing 63 picks before he walked away from the game.

12. Anthony Munoz

78-munoz

“Munoz was a fixture at left tackle for the Bengals for 13 seasons, beginning with his rookie campaign. His 11 Pro Bowls (all consecutive) were the most by an NFL player at the time of Munoz’s retirement (1992).” – NFL Network

13. Joe Greene

joe-greene

“The leader of the “Steel Curtain” defense of the 1970s, Greene was a disruptive force who dominated foes. He had strength and determination, and twice he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1972, 1974).” – NFL Network

14. Sammy Baugh

baugh

“An accurate thrower, Baugh’s passing ability helped change the game. He won a record six NFL passing titles, while also setting marks as a punter and defensive back. He led the NFL in passing, punting and INTs in 1943.” – NFL Network

15. Deacon Jones

deacon-jones

“Jones came out of almost nowhere and blossomed into a dominating pass rusher at defensive end. Jones missed just five games in 14 NFL campaigns and was selected to play in eight Pro Bowls, including seven in a row.” – NFL Network

16. Otto Graham

otto-graham

“The consummate leader, Graham played four years in the AAFC and six in the NFL, and he guided the Browns to the league title game in each of them. He passed for 174 touchdowns and ran for 44.” – Otto Graham

17. Barry Sanders

sanders-tackle

Best pure runner to ever play running back as well as he most elusive. Only RB to have 5 straight 1500 plus seasons.

18. Ray Lewis

ray-lewis1

The best linebacker in my era…fuck it…the best linebacker of all time. “You can’t hurt this, I’ma machine jerk” – Ray Lewis

19. Bronko Nagurski

bronislau-bronko-nagurski

“The legendary Nagurski’s reputation as a bulldozing runner, fierce blocker, and rugged linebacker survives 80 years after he made his NFL debut. A charter member of the Hall of Fame, he helped the Bears win three titles.” – NFL Network

20. Brett Favre

Screen shot 2010-11-07 at 11.29.45 PM

Who’s had more fun playing than him? Gunslinger is who is he is and he’ll never apologize for that. Every significant passing record…the good ones and the bad ones belong to him. Had his best year

This was hands down must see TV. I was on it every week. I know I’m late…I’m sorry I’ve been busy…but I’ll share my thoughts on the list later this week.
