NFL Rookie of the Year is typically a very interesting race to keep tabs on. Most of the time you will have your “All American” types and house hold names near the top but every once in a while a lesser known will sneak to the top with the other pure breads. For every Adrian Peterson, Emmitt Smith, and Ben Roethlisberger that wins there is also a Leonard Russell or John Stephens.
This year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year race is mostly the known quantities with a couple that people might not have expected. At this point in the season we can call the contenders the Killer B’s with maybe one exception. The early leaders are: Sam Bradford, Jahvid Best, and Dez Bryant. I would bet most of America has heard of these three characters. Bradford (#1 pick overall St. Louis Rams, Oklahoma, QB) has the fortune of playing the most high profile position in the NFL, Quarterback. He has been able to stay healthy to this point, which was the biggest question mark for him coming into the season. His stats are good, not great (1,674 yards; 11 TDs; 8 Ints; and a passer rating of 75.9) but the biggest thing going for Sam is St. Louis won 1 game in 2009…1. To this point in the season St. Louis has won 4 games and is tied for the NFC West lead. Ok Ok that isn’t saying much the NFC west is pretty bad, but it’s a huge improvement for a bad team with a rookie QB. I say it’s pretty much Bradford’s to lose at this point be he has some stiff competition right on his heels if he falters.
Dez Bryant (#24 pick overall Dallas Cowboys, Oklahoma State, WR) is really coming on strong of late. He is beginning to look like one of Dallas’ best players. He has emerged as a go to target at WR and has proven to be a big time threat in the return game. Unfortunately for Bryant, Dallas is in the middle of a terrible season, Romo is injured, and Wade Phillips just got fired. He is going to have to play to an extremely high level to get serious recognition. Bryant has 38 receptions for 435 yards and 4 touchdowns. He has also returned 14 punts for 202 yards and 2 TDs.
Another of the Killer B’s is Jahvid Best (#30 overall pick Detroit Lions, California, RB). Best has played on fairly productive Lions offense where he has been the featured back and is more than capable of putting up some impressive stats. He has: 107 carries for 345 yards and 4 TDs. The area where Best has been a bigger surprise is catching passes out of the backfield. Best leads all rookies with 41 receptions for 356 yards and 1 TD. Best is a little banged up but definitely has the potential to put up some big numbers with an aggressive offense. Lions’ QB, Matt Stafford, is now out for possibly the rest of the season and the backup, Shaun Hill, is also a little banged up so they may have to turn to third stringer Drew Stanton.
Then we come to a surprise to our list of Rookies. LeGarrette Blount (undrafted free agent, Oregon, RB). Yes, THAT LeGarrette Blount. You remember, the one who tried to cave in that Bose St. players face after Oregon lost to Boise? This is the same Blount who was released from the Titans and then claimed by his current team, Tampa Bay. It is unlikely that Blount will be able to produce the numbers that would be necessary to win the award but it’s kind of a nice redemption story and he has turned into the feature back for Tampa Bay, so you never know.
I know that some people would have you believe that the Defensive ROY race is all but over, with the winner being Ndamukong Suh (#2 pick overall Detroit Lions, Nebraska, DT). I will admit he is definitely in the running and may very well be in the lead, well maybe if he would have made the PAT in place of Jason Hanson. I honestly can’t hold it against a 300lb DT for missing a kick. Suh has 30 tackles and 6.5 sacks. Rushing the passer is what Suh was brought to Detroit to do and it looks like he is very capable of doing just that. The Lions have the rare chance to double dip the Rookie of the Year award with Suh and Best, that would be quite an accomplishment for a Lions team that hasn’t had much to cheer for in some time.
Eric Berry (#5 overall pick Kansas City Chiefs, Tennessee, S) is another Defensive player who has lived up to the hype. He was the first DB taken in the 2010 Draft and was predicted to have immediate impact for the Kansas City Chiefs. Berry has racked up 45 tackles and 2 Ints to this point and is really playing like a veteran for the upstart Chiefs.
T.J. Ward (#38 overall pick Cleveland Browns, Oregon, S) is leading all NFL rookies in tackles with 67 and has completely over shadowed the Cleveland Brown’s first round selection: Joe Haden. And if you like to root for a bit of an underdog, keep your eye on Alterraun Verner (#104 pick overall Tennessee Titans, UCLA, CB). Verner has 37 tackles, 2 Ints, and 2 Fumble Recoveries on the season and has proved that he can be a ball hawk on an aggressive defense. Verner also has the luxury of playing in a pass-happy division where he will get more than enough opportunities to snag some more picks.
The season is far from over but the races for Rookie of the Year are shaping up to be very competitive. Winning this award doesn’t always translate into long term success in the NFL but it sure does call for the GM to get a big pat on the back.
