Inconsistent and Out of WhackDecember 31, 2010
Something ain’t right in the Big Ten.
Two bowl games, the New Era Pinstripe Bowl and the Music City Bowl were called yesterday by Big Ten officials and they inconsistently called and did not call a penalty. What was the penalty? Excessive celebration. The players in question were Tennessee QB, Tyler Bray, and Kansas State WR, Adrian Hilburn. The KSU wideout caught a short pass late in the game, shook the tackler and took it 30 yards for a touchdown. After he got in the endzone, he seamlessly salute the crowd. It was in no way showboating or malicious at all, but he was flagged for excessive celebration. Kansas State is penalized on their two point conversion try and they miss. I mean, who makes a two point conversion from the 17?
Later on in the day, Tyler Bray, made a few plays and balled out. After nearly every big play he made he gave the ol pro wrestler championship belt motion (Aaron Rodgers does this all the time) and then threw up a quick salute. Hilburn saluted only once and it was called a crucial point of the game by Big Ten officials. Bray, did it several times and it was not called once.

Here is a clip of a fraction of what Tyler Bray was doing. It doesn’t show the belt motion or the salute but the throat slash is clearly shown. Bray was doing this all game long. I know I saw it at least twice after touchdowns.
