Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers are both grabbing the headlines this morning. The two biggest plays in both conference championship games were made by rookies, virtually unknown rookies going into the season.
Sam Shields, the Packers undrafted CB out of Miami, picked off two passes in crucial moments of yesterday’s NFC Championship game. The first was the best. He ran a better route than the Bears’ Johnny Knox and caught the ball at it’s highest point. The second pick sealed the game. Shields has been playing out of his mind all season long. It’s crazy because he only played one year at CB at the University of Miami spending his first three years at WR for the Canes.
In the AFC championship game, the Steelers jumped out on top of the Jets in the first half. Once the Steelers throttled down, the Jets creeped back into the game. On a crucial 3rd and 6, Ben Roethlisberger scrambles out of the pocket and throws a floating dart to Antonio Brown. Yeah, that Antonio Brown….the 6th round rookie out of Central Michigan. The same rookie that made the play of the game last weekend as well.
It’s great to see these two rookies playing well. These two rookies probably faced unbelievable pressure just to make the team. Now these two rooks are making big plays in big games that have helped their teams make it to the Super Bowl in their rookie years.
