Luck Ain’t LeavingJanuary 6, 2011

If you’re a studious football fan, you know that Andrew Luck isn’t jumping ship to the NFL. He stated that he wants to get his degree which will be completed next year.

My initial thoughts are “don’t do it brosef”. You can go back to school anytime. Look at what staying in school did for Matt Leinhart, he dropped from the #1 pick to the #10 pick.  Look at Sam Bradford, although he would have been the #1 pick in 2009, and he still ended up being just that in 2010. What did he do his entire 2009 football season? He nursed a bad shoulder, had surgery and watched his team do not so well without him. Jake Locker stayed one more year and was going to challenge Sam Bradford last year as the first pick. Lord only knows how far Jake is going to slip this year. I’ll take it way back to Dre Bly, he was a bonafide star at UNC. He was a consensus first team All-American as redshirt freshman and sophomore. He should have left after his sophomore season, but he elected to stay. He stayed and got exposed by Peter Warrick on national television. Subsequently, Bly went from the first round to the second round by staying in school that extra year.

You can say, but Richard… he comes from money, so money isn’t a problem in his life. Also, Richard!!! He’s staying in school for his education!

Great and good for Andrew, I applaud Luck for the courage to make such a decision.

But let me remind you….if you don’t use it you lose it. Is that not right with anything in life aside from riding a bike or tying your shoes? Luck is an architectural engineering major. If he has the career we all expect, which is that of 10 plus years in the league, what is he going to do when he retires? Be an architectural engineer? With a 10+ year layoff? If you don’t use it you lose it and technology will have for sure advanced while Luck is in the league. So why not come out and play ball this year, have a great career, and when he’s done go back to school and catch up everything he’s missed during his great 10+ year career?

Also, Harbaugh is leaving, well he may not be. In the case that he does, do you want a new coach right now? Rich Rodriguez inherited Ryan Mallett and didn’t want any parts of him. Who’s to say the new Stanford coach doesn’t want to run a spread option system. Yes, I know the death of the spread option offense is slowly upon us…but it could happen.

Kudos to Luck for staying and it not being about the money, but about his education. But Andrew isn’t majoring in phys ed, education, or library studies. He’s majoring in something very complex, advanced and something that is always changing. Luck will have a very long career. Getting your degree now and not using it for ten plus years is much worse than leaving now and getting your degree ten years later when you’ll be able to catch up on what has changed in your profession.

Either way, that’s all I got,

Ricky Writer
