I parked myself in front of the TV this weekend and watched the Mr. Football American pageant known as the NFL combine. The WRs left something to be desired honestly. I think there’s more talent in this year’s NBA draft than their is in this crop of WRs. Of course Julio Jones and A.J. Green jump off the page, but after that I’m not sold on anyone. I don’t plan on jumping on the Torrey Smith train anytime soon despite his 41 inch vertical leap and 4.41 40 yard dash.
I hope everyone doesn’t make snap judgments on Cam Newton…oh wait, they already are. He threw 11 for 21 which isn’t great. But think about it, he was throwing to players he wasn’t used to working with. Yes, he overshot some receivers, but he’s throwing to less athletic players who don’t run near as well as his Auburn receivers.
I don’t care about the combine workouts really. What does your game film look like. A great quote from Florida FS, Ahmad Black, when he was asked how he compensates for a lack of size 5’9″ 184 lbs. “I got game film, man.”
I love it, and quite frankly that’s all that matters anyway. Tom Brady didn’t look the part at the combine. Arian Foster ran a 4.71. Hell, Mark Ingram ran a 4.62 and if he’s not the first RB off the board I’ll torture myself by wearing a Texas Longhorns t-shirt and Oklahoma State hat. I don’t care what Ingram runs, I care about his game film of him running away from SEC defenders.
If you’re combine workout is better than your game film, I’m going to be suspect. If you’re game film is better than your combine workout, I’m not tripping. Why? Because….you’ve played the game all your life. Some 100 some odd games are under your belt. How many combines and pro days will you be apart of….2 max. If you’ve performed so so in 20 – 40 college games and ball out for a workout…..ehh I’ll pass.
