Everyone knows the debate this year at quarterback is Cam Newton the Quarterback vs. Cam Newton the Entertainer Blaine Gabbert. You are either pro-Cam Newton or you just go for Blaine because he is the other alternative. Believe it or not, there are other quarterbacks in this year’s draft that could make a future impact for fortunate team. Of course, this is pending the situation or environment that they are in. For an example, would we know about Tom Brady or Matt Cassel if neither the QBs in front of them wouldn’t have gotten injured? The quarterback that I believe could be the next “hidden gem” is Ricky Stanzi. I know many people are not sold on a prospect from the Big Ten or even from Iowa for that matter but if he learns under an established and successful quarterback I think he will be grand.
Ricky Stanzi’s 6’4 and 222 pounds is similar to that of Tom Brady’s but for the sake of argument that will be the only time I compare the two in this article. With that being said, Stanzi has the build of a prototypical NFL quarterback. The first thing that I appreciated about Ricky is he’s a competitor and he wins. He took his team to 3 bowls and they won all 3 of them. Some people say that winning should not be a factor in whether or not you draft a quarterback but if you cannot win on the college level how do you expect to lead a group of elite athletes. He is a true leader on the field and that is a factor I look for in my quarterback. For people to say that he struggles with accuracy is just an appalling proclamation. If you look at his stats you can clearly see the progression that he has made from his junior year to his senior year. His passing percentage went up from 56% to 64% and his touchdown to interception ratio drastically improved (17-15 to 25-6).
Critics are quick to point out his sub-par arm strength and you will not see scouts drool over it. Thing is I have yet to see him not make a throw that that matters whether it is a deep ball or an out route (the routes he “struggle” on). Absolutely not saying that arm strength doesn’t matter but it is somewhat overrated when it comes to rating quarterbacks. Even though he may be inconsistent at times, that can be fixed with training from now until whenever the CBA gets agreed upon. With that being said, his intermediate game is something that is possibly his best throwing attribute. He delivers passes with such zip and accuracy that he can fit it into the smallest of windows. Stanzi’s almost perfect mechanics and footwork is what allows him to be so good at this.
The thing that Stanzi wins at any way you see it is the intangibles category. As mentioned earlier, he is a great competitor and great leader with exceptional poise. Stanzi has led the Hawkeyes out of plenty of holes such as games against Penn State and Wisconsin. Against Michigan State he made a clutch throw down on the goal line to help them win. With all of that being said, of course Stanzi will not be a first day pick for any team nor do you want him to be your starter right now. He could become a effective quarterback if given the right tools and on the right team. Stanzi’s intangibles and his accuracy lead me to believe that he has the ability to become a starter in a few seasons.
