The Collective Bargaining Agreement between the owners and NFLPA is working its way out slowly, day by day, meeting by meeting, but surely a deal will get done. The itch to play football must be on the mind of all the players. I bet they’re thinking of the possible matchups, the roar of the crowd, the limelight, all of the extra that comes with playing in the NFL. Most likely they are chomping at the bit to get bit to get back in action. Sitting and waiting for the results of the CBA must be nerve wrecking for the current NFL players.
Former RB of the New York Giants, Tiki Barber, recently just filed to be reinstated to be eligible to return to the NFL out of retirement. Barber, the soon to be 36 year old, retired from the NFL in 2006 after giving 10 seasons to the Giants. He ended his career on a good note rushing 1,662 yards and five touchdowns in 2006. He’s coming back for a reason. We can only assume that those lost dreams of making that big play could come to fruition for Barber. Aww, it seems very warming and heartfelt, until reality sets in. Mr. Barber, only one man has been and will ever be allowed to put on the robe and walk off the stage and come back better than before, and that my friend is James Brown.
I just don’t understand why these athletes want to taint their legacy by coming back playing very little and earning peanuts by NFL standards. I think the only people that should “make a comeback” are wrestlers. I mean, do you really get tired of seeing Ric Flair? Be honest!
Tiki’s brother, Ronde Barber, recently signed to another one year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this off season. Barber said seeing how much fun his brother was still having was one main reason for wanting to come back. I say if football looks so much fun, go play flag, go coach, but please don’t come back on national television so that the whole word can see you suck it up and then RE-retired in a month or two. Ask Brett Favre, the risk/reward ratio is not worth it in the long run. We as a football community have come to strongly dislike Favre after the up and down seasons he has had since his first retirement.
So from me to you Mr. Barber, as the outro music began playing for you in 2006 and your assistant ran on the stage and draped you with that red, white, and blue Giant cape and you walked off stage; remember two things:
1) You have been there, and have done that, and were one of the best.
2) You are Tiki Barber, NOT James Brown. Running back on stage WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU.
