Columbus, Ohio is home to The Ohio State Buckeyes. The city has been smearing the NCAA lately. The school has had a more than awful track record when it comes to the sports world and this last instance should come as no surprise. Think of it as the candles, which are on the writing, that’s on the icing of the cake.
Head football coach, Jim Tressel, received an e-mail last April telling him that two of his players were caught up selling memorabilia in exchange for tattoos and also involved in a drug-trafficking case(both NCAA violations). An insider tip that you have some shady players should have lead to some type of discipline, suspension, or even dismissal of the players. For some reason, Tressel swept it under the rug(NCAA violaton), maybe it was Spring-cleaning!
The five players that Tressel knew were in violation were allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl. These were not five random players in this instance, but they were impact players that all aided in the 31-26 victory over Arkansas in January to win the 2011 Sugar Bowl. The five players had already been suspended for the first 5 games of the 2011 season, yet they were given permission to play in that game, a game that without those players OSU loses.
So what does the NCAA do about this? Nothing(so far hopefully they get their act together soon), because OSU has already taken action by fining Tressel $250,000 and suspending him for 2 games. Ohio State’s ruling was a mere slap on the wrist if you ask me. OSU raked in a few million for winning that BCS game, and I’m sure some of it was given to Tressel as a bonus for winning, so he probably comes out even.
Case by case scenario, the NCAA’s ruling on violations are a joke to me. Oklahoma State WR, Dez Bryant, was suspended for the entire 2009 season for lying about going to, and working out with Deion Sanders (which was not a NCAA Violation). Yet, Tressel harbors two federally investigated players with drug charges pending and then some but he’s only sitting out two games. Can someone tell me what I’m missing? All in all I have to admire Tressel, and OSU for their work though, they are the poster children for the slogan “If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying!” and we can all see The Ohio State Buckeyes are trying hard as hell.
Hopefully the NCAA doesn’t spit in our faces and allow Ohio State’s lame ass self-imposed sanctions stand, and the bring in the hammer which is what Ohio State fairly deserves.
