The connection between football and hip-hop is simple they are one in the same. The goal is to be better than all your counterparts and win in style. Invariably, it seems the best rapper will be labeled as having a tremendous work ethic, just as the best athletes don’t shy away from working to the top either. Hip-Hop culture is driven by Black youths ranging in age from 15-35 and football is the same way to an extent.
The intent here is not to start race war (which I am totally ready for lol j/k) but just to understand the brain trust behind both movements. How much free advertising does Beats by Dre headphones have to get for you to understand the undeniable connection between football and hip-hop? Cam Newton was always seen prior to games with his headphones getting his mind right to Waka Flocka Flame, Big Krit, or who knows what, but what we do know is that it was not the White Stripes. Getting back to the demographic aspect of this issue if indeed young Black men are the driving force between Hip Hop and Football would it not be similar that cues from both would be similar? Style, bravado, dress, walk, talk and flair for the dramatic all fall as parameters for football and hip-hop.
What may drive old white men to sleepless at night pondering why they would celebrate so brazenly after a touchdown. Is the same reason that the Alabama football team pumps Yelawolf through its loudspeakers before a game. If you don’t understand you are probably going to hate it. If you do love it your are probably in the know. Football and Hip-Hop go together like Dickie Shorts and tank top undershirts. The connection is and will always will be there.
I would like to thank God, Oprah (as always) and Dr. Dre for inspiring me and also football and hip-hop for being the most stable marriage I may ever be around.
