So, Commissioner Goddell, owners and some of the fans of the National Football League are hellbent on pushing this issue of an 18 game season, but the players of the are not bulging. They stand strong in saying an 18 game season is ” Not what that is”. And really, who can blame them? I mean after all, they are barely maintaining at the 16 games they play now. They are acquiring some serious injuries that are life threatening and career ending and adding 2 extra games is just belittling the injuries sustained.
It’s not just about the quantity of the games played, but taking away the “meaningless” yet “meaningful” preseason reduces the quality of the game we love. Once you reduce the quality a trickle down effect will happen with the end result being the owners losing money, and isn’t that what they are here for? Think about it, its easy to say that “it’s just two more games”, but you have players like DeMeco Ryans of the Houston Texans who was injured at the beginning of the season and caused the Texans to have to reformat their defense completely. The Texans don’t have enough players to go around and sustain a huge injury like that. Or let’s take the injury of Andre Johnson in game 2 of the season, luckily he still managed to play through the season. You add two more games to that ankle and it could have been all over for him.
This is not baseball. This is not basketball. This is football. a full contact, man on man, oooh shit I just broke my leg, type of game. Players get hurt. Seriously hurt. Those star players get hurt, then you have to bring in the backup, once the backup is hurt you bring in practice squad, and once the practice squad is hurt, you just bring in anyone who can fit the pads and knows the game.
So Commissioner Goodell, to you and whoever else believes that this can be feasible and the players can benefit from the 18 games just as much as the owners……”We Don’t Believe You, You Need More People”.
