So you’re sitting in the draft war room and your trying to decide the way to go. Should you go offense or defense? As the clock ticks down to zero, you evaluate your team needs, glancing back and forth from the draft board and the player management chart. Decisions, decisions, what would benefit my team the most.
Now let’s just say you have a good to great quarterback on your team. We all can say without a doubt that the QB position is the most important position you need to have a successful season. But the question is, what’s next best position on the field?
Now some may answer quick thinking it’s the Left Tackle. The LT is the personal security guard of the QB. Hell they even made a movie about it call the “Blind Side”. Having an elite LT can change the game, but it’s not the 2nd best position on the field. You can can still protect your QB’s backside with schemed blocking tactics.
Moving on, the Middle Linebacker you say? I mean, he does bark out the orders to the front seven. Having a beast at MLB, which is the heart and soul of a defense is very important. When you look at any dominating defense in the league, they all have a mega star at MLB. It’s still not 2nd best, because a great offense and QB will always out scheme the abilities of a great MLB.
The answer isn’t anywhere near the QB or the MLB of the football field, but… it’s located out there…in the distance, on an island. That’s right, the 2nd most important position on the football field, JUST happens to be the flashiest position on the football field, the Cornerback position. The CB has to eat, sleep, and breathe in himself, just as the QB does. If a QB is having a bad game, the worst thing for them to do is to think. Thinking instead of reaction equals a CB’s dream of dashing to the endzone and thinking along the way, “What am I going to do once I get in there?”
But the roles can be reversed, when a QB and WR are on the same page, a shaky CB can be an offense’s best friend. Picking on the weak-minded corner, over and over, diminishing his confidence completion by completion, score by score. A CB has to have a mental toughness like no other on the field. A forgetful memory, that yet needs to remember everything. Having a “shutdown” CB allows teams to do so much on defense. Having that security blanket, a ”cover” corner on the field is the one position you can’t scheme out. You can test him, if you dare, and if you don’t that is just one less option you have to look at as a QB.
Corners like Revis, Asomugha, and Bailey have amplified their teams’ defense by allowing more blitzes to be sent due to the coverage the can provide.
So the simple equation is ….Blitz Pressure + Coverage = Decreased QB decision time resulting in Error (Interception).
There are sayings that the most impactful plays are the turnovers, because of what it does to the mentally of the offense. Think of it as giving someone $10 dollars vs. that same person taking it from you. Wouldn’t you just get mad, “How are you going to TAKE my $10 from me?” You just got mad didn’t you? Now think of it as a bully, you NOW know, if you go over there, he just might take your money again, and you then you think “forget that, imma take the safe side of the street next time”.
Cornerbacks are some damn bullies. They are also some of the cockiest, egotistical players to ever to play football. But I know one thing for sure, this draft day coming up, teams are going to be looking for that next piece of there puzzle to the Super Bowl Championship and if they can obtain a shutdown corner, the road will be just that easier. QB’s beware!
