Simple question. Is Hines Ward a Hall of Famer? Make sure you take your emotions out of it when you answer the question. It’s easy to say yes. Hines is a more than likeable player. He’s a football fans player. He’s the best blocking WR of all-time. He was a hard worker and you could see that he enjoyed the game while he played. He always put the team before himself. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the most storied franchises, his entire career.
It’s easy to say yes. Hines is a Hall of Famer. We often hear the term, perception is reality, but is “emotion” reality? I don’t know. I do know that the Pro Football Hall of Fame is not a joke like the Basketball Hall of Fame who let’s damn near anyone in.
I do know that his 954 catches for 11,702 yards and 85 touchdowns are not bad, but they aren’t great. Cris Carter and Tim Brown’s numbers crush Ward. Neither Brown or Carter has yet to make it into the Hall of Fame. People make a huge fuss about Andre Reed being a Hall of Famer. Reed and Ward’s numbers are similar. Reed played spread offense and had to share the ball with another hall of famers such as Thurman Thomas, and other good players like James Lofton and Don Bebe. Ward has never been a true #1 receiver.
To his credit, Ward is the Steelers all time leader in every receiving category. Better than Hall of Famers, John Stallworth and Lynn Swann who were both Steeler legends of course. Those two played back in the day when all the Steelers did was run the football, control the clock, and play Steel curtain defense.
The Hall of Fame is for the elite, upper echelon, the greatest of the great. Look at two receivers that have played in Ward’s era: Randy Moss and Terrell Owens….game changers. Hines Ward didn’t change any games. Teams didn’t gameplan for Hines Ward.
I don’t think he’s a Hall of Famer, but who am I? What do you think?
