Lockout lifted, but what’s it really mean?April 26, 2011

So, the lockout ended late yesterday evening. Although the news was great for the players and fans, it left more questions than answers. The judge ruled for the lockout to end, and the NFL immediately appealed the ruling and asked for a “stay”(simply a motion to keep things they way they are now until the appeal is resolved). So really, what happens next?

Let me say, thank God for Peter King. Of all the gabajazillion articles (okay maybe five) that I read, King’s was the only understandable one. So with the ruling here are three things that can happen…from the words of Mr. King,

-The judge could allow the stay, keeping NFL doors locked until the appeals court hears the case.

-The judge could not allow the stay and order the 2011 league year — with free-agency and player trades — to begin immediately, or within days … which would throw the league into chaos this week as it prepares for the three-day draft to begin Thursday night in New York.

-Or the judge could allow the Eighth Circuit to rule on the stay, which one legal expert Monday night said would take between two and seven days. In this case, the appeals court could either order the league year to start immediately or wait until the resolution of the case in appeals.

So essentially it’s mad crazy right now in the NFL. It’s a lawless league. With no collective bargaining agreement in place, the NFL is going to try its hardest not to do any free agent deals. Also, what system is the league going to operate under until then? The 2010 no salary cap system? Players are already starting to report to work today, and some are requesting their workout bonuses also.

So yes, the lockout has been lifted, but the NFL is still in limbo. I still stand by my stance that the NFL season will not miss any games, but right now things are a long way from being resolved.

That’s all I got,
