The first five picks of the draft went according to what many may have thought. Cam Newton to the Panthers will be a good fit for years to come if Ron Rivera has a great scheme and Cam is willing to put in the work. Arizona could have gone quarterback but they went safe and drafted the best player available in Patrick Peterson. They will be the NFC’s version of the Jets at the defensive back position. After the first five picks though, this is when things got pretty erratic.

Next up you have Julio Jones going 6th overall, but it isn’t to the Browns but the Falcons. It is a great move by them because they instantly became that more potent on offense. But did they have to give up so much for him? The 49ers had a chance to draft a future quarterback, but they went defensive and not the defensive player I thought they would get. Instead of going for a DE like Cameron Jordan, Robert Quinn, or J.J. Watt they went Aldon Smith out of Missouri. I didn’t even know he was considered a Top 10 pick but it was a position need so you cannot knock them for that, but in my mind, the 49ers were no doubt the loser of day one.

Probably the biggest shocker to me was Jake Locker to the Titans. I understand that you needed a new face for the franchise, but Locker isn’t a winner to me. He seems to be Brady Quinn-like with the mechanics but it will be interesting to see how he does.

The next biggest surprise was the Jaguars reaching by trading up for Blaine Gabbert. He probably won’t even play anytime in the near future, but he was drafted in the Top 10 and I can’t comprehend the reason why. The prior two teams should have drafted Christian Ponder but the Vikings got lucky and got their man. The Texans, Cowboys, and Lions all were on their Charlie Sheen as they completely won with their picks. The Texans and Lions are both building defenses that should be in the top soon and the Cowboys helped to make sure that Romo’s season won’t end again soon. I did feel like the Giants got a really got steal by getting Prince Amukamara and he will pay dividends. Even though Jimmy Smith had “character issues”, the Ravens got them a great young DB. I felt that he was just as good as Prince if not better and Ed Reed will mentor the young guy.

The biggest win for any team had to be the Saints when Mark Ingram fell to them. His career will model that of Emmitt Smith but a 2.0 version. Day one was great especially to see the NFC South just get better and looks to be replacing the NFC East as the dominant conference. Day two and three looks promising with players like Ryan Mallet and Daquan Bowers still on the board.
