Step Parents and New FamiliesApril 13, 2011

Vince-Young--730_20100614151940_660_320

I have six brothers and sisters and not a one of ‘em is “real”. Real meaning, same parents. Now, I love all of my siblings the same and I don’t refer to any of them as half or step brother/sister. If you my sister, you are my sister. If you are my brother you are my brother. Nevertheless, getting a new parent or sibling can be tough. If you play sports it’s something you get used to as far as new teammates and/or coaches, but not always.

Look at players dealing with change: John Brantley (new head coach and offensive scheme) Tommie Harris (recently cut) Bob Sanders (cut from the only team he’s known), Sam Bradford (new offensive/hard to get along with coordinator in Josh McDaniels), and many more players are going through change.

Randy Moss has been there and done that with coaching changes. He’s done it well and terribly not so well. In fact, he did it twice last season. How will he do this go around, only Randy knows that answer.

KevinKolbKevin Kolb and Vince Young are looking for change. But the honest truth is one of those players will be highly sought after, and the one other will get a reality check.

Donovan McNabb it looks like will be on this third team in three years. It’s tough because a quarterback must know the system inside out and be able to lead. This is not an easy thing to do when you’re team hopping.

Then you have Jason Campbell. Your heart has to go out to this man. In 10 seasons, 4 college and 6 pro, this man has had a different offensive coordinator. That’s ten new offenses he’s had to learn. He’s like the foster child no one wants. It has to suck for him to have to deal with this much change.

Then you have Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen. Both players suffered the ups and downs of being a rookie QB in the NFL. They both ended the season starting for their teams with high hopes of leading their teams into the playoffs this upcoming season. Uhhh, no suurh! Both young tikes got new coaches and new coordinators. Most discouraging, neither QB is wanting by their respective new regimes.

When joining a new family or having new people join your family that will power over whether or not you stay in the family there are a few things you must do. Players must….

1. Play Nice

Yes sir, no sir. Get along with anyone and everyone. They are NOT committed to you and will get rid of you.

2. Team First, Me Second

You have to go balls to the wall. Just like people love to talk about themselves coaches love “team players”. Give them no excuses to let you go concerning your work ethic.

3. Don’t Burn Bridges

You really think this is the last you are going to see of this coach or anyone on his staff? Yeah right. Don’t let someone from that staff be on your next team. Or a scout or coach from the next team you’re getting ready to sign with be buddy buddy with someone from the coaching staff of your former team. You reap what you sow, so act a fool when you’re walking out the door and see where it gets you.

That’s all I got,

Ricky Writer
