The mixtape: How much is it really helping?April 26, 2011

When I was a freshman in college I was a Radio,Television, and Film major. I was at orientation when I had a very important question, before I embarked on my college career. I raised my hand and essentially asked how confident I could be that after leaving school I’ll be successful finding employment. I wanted an assurance that the route I was taking was one that was going to pan out. Recently people in the music industry have been wondering the same thing about what has almost instantly become an industry standard, the mixtape.
The music industry, like any other, is one that emulates what they perceive to be the successful model. The success of Cam’Ron and The Diplomats, 50 Cent and G-Unit and a little later Lil Wayne and his renaissance were all marked up to the breackneck pace they were able to release new material through mixtapes. You probably still can’t read a Lil Wayne write-up that doesn’t mention them. While mixtapes were a large component of what contributed to their success people often overlook the other and more important contributing factors in their success. Each of the aforementioned possessed a charisma that has drawn a following since people were spinning vinyl singles with regularity. They also had previous name association with major labels that made their work relevant to the average fan. Most importantly, they were all making music that was just plain great.
People always tend to overestimate the technology or the technique when in rap, it’s almost always comes down to the people behind them. Do mixtapes still work? Only if the artist behind it makes it worth it. When I asked my question, the answer I got was one that has stuck with me longer than the Radio Televison and Film major did, “it’ll only work for you, if you make it work for you,” this is true for the mixtape as well.
