If there is one positive to rap music that even its detractors must concede is that it, at this point, the genre has helped thousands of young men and women reach opportunities that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Counting the artist who are at least able to make a comfortable living, whether they make the Forbes list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings or not and the thousands of jobs that revolve around them it has put billions into the hands of folk who otherwise might have found a worse way to get over.
Without a student loan or an interview, anyone who wants to add their voice to the culture can do just that if they are persistent and good enough. The majority of hip hop’s chattering class lament this fact often, but I suspect that the fact that hip-hop resembles the Wild West is part of the appeal that drew them to the culture and keeps them interested. With that in mind, I would like to extend my hand to any and every person out there trying to come up while adding to the culture. If you send it to me, I’ll listen to it and to the best of my ability offer feedback and if I don’t write about it here, if you write it I’ll read it and do the same. I won’t steal from you and I won’t big time you. I enjoy the chaos of mass creativity that constitutes hip hop, let’s add to it.
