So, the Tressel is gone, and the life long assistant who’s name I don’t know and don’t care to look up will be the interim coach. He’s not going to be the head coach in 2012, I’ll bet $1000 on it. So who will be?
Urban Meyer – Meyer is the ideal candidate. Born in Ohio and began his coaching career at Ohio State. He’s won two national titles and took Utah to the BCS and won. He left Florida on top and you can tell he’s itching to get back in the game.
Jon Gruden – Born in Ohio. The most popular and entertaining analyst out right now. Oh yeah, he has a Super Bowl win under his belt. I can tell you right now that there will be an ESPN series called “The Recruiting tales of Jon Gruden” if he does coach at OSU because he will land damn near every kid he talks too. Also, these kids want to get to the league….who better than to teach them than Gruden. The college game is about getting athletes where the NFL game is about details. Gruden will do both, very well.
Dan Mullen – He’s the hottest young coach in college right now. He’s a poor man’s version of Meyer. He coached under Meyer and spent time at Notre Dame.
Bo Pelini - He has a great track record as a coach and a defensive coordinator. He’s only 43. He’s an Ohio native and played for the Buckeyes. Pelini’s name being bandied about last winter was no coincidence. Nebraska did give him a raise, but his alma mater could pay him more and offer him a better competitive opportunity.
A Stoops – Mike and Bob are both Youngstown natives. Bob is tied with Tressel with the most BCS appearances and has also won a national championship. But OU and Ohio State are on the same level, so this would be a lateral move for Bob and only satisfy a childhood dream if it ever was one. For Mike, it’d be a huge step up. He turned Arizona around…can he do the same at a better school?
Gary Patterson – Built TCU from the ground up. 99-28 in ten seasons. Won a BCS game and probably would have won a national title had there been a college playoff system. You see what he’s doing with TCU level athletes imagine if he had Ohio State boys. Damn…!
Chris Petersen – As long as he’s at Boise State and winning, his name is going to come up for every big time coaching job. This might be one he can’t pass up.
