Mannie Fresh should be a household name. The New Orleans innovator has been a constant in music since Gregory D. Helping to build bounce as a genre and then become the in-house producer for the most successful label in New Orleans history should be more than enough to afford him legendary status. Unfortunately, Fresh was born in New Orleans so instead of lionization and a concerted effort by fans to turn every turd into shinola he’s treated almost as an also ran. Bring up Mannie Fresh in the discussion of top notch producers and you’re most likely going to get a “he’s alright but come on” look. The fact that dude has produced classics and as much commercial success as any other producer you can name this side of Dr. Dre and Timbaland is forgotten to the point that I feel that’s why he isn’t getting nearly as much work as he should. If DJ Premier can hook up with Camp Lo and create material why isn’t the demand for Fresh just as high? Look at his work.
