The free agency period hasn’t even started yet but it is never too soon to throw some predictions for the upcoming NFL season (if we even have one). The draft has come and gone and teams were forced to fill gaps without even having the free agency route to explore. Free agency is a HUGE part of the NFL offseason and can change teams from pretenders to contenders. It will be interesting to see what teams really make an effort in the free agency market and attempt to take the next step in winning a championship.
NFC East – Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles
The NFC East is one of those “Glory Divisions” in the NFL. These 4 teams have enormous and very rabid fan bases. The East is also blessed to have four teams in four of the best sports cities in the country. You will find some of the best rivalries in the entire League and not to mention a total of 11 Super Bowls. The problem is, apart from the Giants in 2008, there hasn’t been much success in the last decade for some of football’s most storied franchises.
The Redskins have issues galore and I feel pretty confident in saying there is pretty much no chance of a playoff appearance much less a Super Bowl. I really don’t have anything positive to say about the Redskins. They have had awful QB play, even with the addition of Donovan McNabb, injuries upon injuries at the RB position, and not to mention they gave up the 2nd most yards of any team in the entire league.
The East will come down to a battle between the Eagles, Giants, and Cowboys. The biggest question mark to me is the Cowboys. How does Tony Romo come back from the injury? Can the secondary cover anyone? Does the OL keep Romo from being injured again? The Cowboys are a 50/50 proposition in my opinion. They could make a leap forward and have an 11-5 type season (if they even play 16 games this year) or they could flounder again and have a 7-9 or 8-8 type of year. I’m not in love with the Cowboys, so I think I will steer clear of picking them to win the East.
That leaves us with the Giants and the Eagles. I love the Eagles on offense. There are few teams that I enjoy watching more when they have the ball. Andy Reid has been considered a great offensive mind for some time now and his teams have shown that over his career. The D was solid last year too. I honestly don’t think the Eagles would have won 10 games with Kevin Kolb at QB. Michael Vick had an amazing statistical year and seemed to really make strides in becoming “Quarterback” rather than an athlete playing quarterback.
The Giants are the best team in the division as far as the offensive and defensive rankings go. I don’t think Eli Manning is an elite QB in this league, but he is above average. I think he is solid but he throws way too many INTs for my taste. The guy had 25 picks last year compared to 31 TDs. If he can protect the ball in 2011 the Giants can lean on that stout defense and make a run at an NFC title. The one area that I think potentially gives the Giants the edge is the fact that they run the ball so well (6th in rushing yards out of 32 teams in 2010). You may say, “This is a QB’s league, what does it matter how they run the ball”. And you would be basically correct except, as the season goes on and the weather gets worse it is paramount to be able to run the ball effectively. NY can do that. I am not convinced that Philly can run the ball when they absolutely have to. I think that both of these teams will represent the NFC East in the playoffs and have a decent shot at getting to the NFC title game. That leaves me with my prediction. Who will win the NFC East??
