Top 100 Players of 2011: 100-91May 5, 2011
Ah yes, NFL network’s Top 100 is back, but with a twist. Instead of the Top 100 players of All-Time, they are featuring the Top 100 current players of 2011. This time the list wasn’t in the hand of agenda-minded media who’ve never played the game before, but it was in the hands of the players themselves. So if fans or players have a problem with where someone ranks on the list, point the finger at the players. The list kicked off last Saturday after the draft ended and will air new episodes every Sunday at 8pm. Here’s how 100-91 turned out.
100. Donovan McNabb presented by Brian Westbrook
The title is confusing. “Top 100 Players of 2011″ What does that mean? The top players of 2011 based on how they performed in 2010? Or is it the Top Players in the game right now? If it’s the former, then McNabb should not be here, but if it’s the latter then he’s where he needs to be. You can clearly see his skills eroding and he’s not as sharp as he once was, but if he plays with a good support group he’s still got some of it.
99. Chad Clifton
The Packers’ left tackle is the reason why Aaron Rodgers has been lighting people up for the past two seasons.
98. Darren McFadden presented by Maurice Jones-Drew
I’m not sure if it was the injuries or the bad team he’s been on, but McFadden was non-existent in Oakland until this past year. We saw flashes of what we expected coming out of Arkansas. I mean if MJD is giving him praise and telling us to wait, then we’ll give D-Mac one more year to take the NFL by storm like we know he can.
97. Shaun Phillips presented by Kirk Morrison
This guy is relentless. It’s a shame he plays all the way out on the West coast and doesn’t get the press he deserves. Think of how much havoc he’d cause if Shawne Merriman was healthy and still playing on the other side.
96. Nick Collins presented by Dom Capers
First off, I don’t like coaches presenting players. Can we get players to present players please? Either way, Charles Woodson may be the star of the Packers defense, but Collins is the glue that keeps everything running smooth.
95. Jon beason presented by John Fox
You already know how I feel about coaches presenting players. Beason reminds me of a more athletic London Fletcher. It also sucks for him that he’s on such a sucky team that he doesn’t get more pub.
94. Frank Gore presented by Takeo Spikes
It’s still amazing to me that the kid suffered two ACL tears in college, went from potential first round star to third rounder. And now, he’s clearly one of the best RBs in the league.
93. Eric Berry presented by Todd Haley
The first rookie to grace the list with his presence and he definitely will not be the last. Not an Ed Reed type but closer to Troy Polamalu and that’s not a bad comparison either.
92. Lance Briggs presented by Mike Martz
If there was no such thing as advertising and marketing it’d be clear that Briggs is the best linebacker on the Bears’ team and it’s not even close. He can run stuff, blitz, and cover.
91. Terrell Owens presented by Brandon Marshall
People wrote him off in Buffalo and he came to Cincy and he had a better year than Ochocinco. Don’t get it twisted, the Bengals poor season had nothing to do with the wideouts. It was all Carson Palmer. Owens can still ball even at the age of 37.
