Three very famous wideouts, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and Chad Ochocinco’s careers are slowly coming to an end. What will their legacies be and how will they be remembered once they retire?
Terrell Owens
Terrell Owens hit the league as a virtual unknown. Credit the 49ers for discovering the WR and drafting him in the third round in 1996. He hit the league hard and paved a way for himself. He outshined Jerry Rice, in Rice’s final game setting a then record for catching 20 balls in one game. He has a signature moment, with his last second touchdown catch from Steve Young in the 1998 Wildcard playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.
Then T.O. turned….Where you never really heard about him before, you started hearing about him more in the media. He was rumored to have destroyed locker rooms, told the media his QB was gay, vetoed a trade to the Baltimore Ravens. There’s more of course, he balled out in a Super Bowl and then threw his QB under the bus, he wanted more MONEY now, he did pushups for the media, he became a Cowboy, threw more coaches and players under the bus etc. Now T.O. is balling in Cincy, he’s still got some of it. He’s not the player he was once, but he can still ball.
Statistically, Owens is the second best player of all-time behind Jerry Rice. You can’t knock him off the field because he was never involved in any major off-field incidents. Spoiled and selfish yes, criminal? Never.
The crazy thing about the NFL is that you control your entire career until it’s over, and then the Hall of Fame voters control it. I don’t like that to be honest with you, but it is what it is. Because of Owen’s jerktard attitude with the media, he may not make it into the Hall of Fame for quite some time. I can guarantee you he won’t be a first ballot guy and it will be purely because of his attitude. Of course, they will hold Owen’s inability to hold onto the ball against him. Because several times he led the league in dropped balls. He wasn’t the greatest to deal with off the field or on the field, and on the field is what matters. The only thing his career is missing is a Super Bowl.
Owens will be remembered as the most selfish receiver of all-time and his greatness will be overlooked.
Randy Moss
Moss is the best rookie wide receiver ever. point blank, period, don’t argue with me. On the field you marveled at Randy Moss’ speed, grace and hand eye coordination. Moss was respected by the media, other players and fans unlike Owens. Moss was not a locker room destroyer. Moss did have several off the field incidents with the police, although none of them were major they still occurred.
I firmly believe that Moss will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. If you check his stats, he statistically the third best wide receiver and that includes his years of purgatory in Oakland and this passed year where he was passed around more times than a Taylor Gang blunt.
Moss was the most physically gifted receiver to ever play the game and will be a first ballot Hall of Famer even though he didn’t play hard all of the time. Randy Moss is Usain Bolt when he slowed up in the 2008 Olympics and still set the world record at 9.69 seconds. Imagine if Randy gave it his all like Usain did in 2009 when he crushed his own record and ran 9.58 seconds.
Chad Ochocinco
Ochocinco is clearly the least talented of these two, but that’s not to say he’s not a really good receiver because he is. For much of his career he had no running game, or any kind of functional team. Often it was only Carson Palmer and Ocho doing much of the damage. He was never viewed as a jerk with the media or fans. The old foggies may have thought that his touchdown celebrations were over the top, but their just old. Ocho is most known for his off the field antics, from VH1 shows, Dancing with the Stars, and riding a bull.
Ocho is a good receiver, but a better entertainer. I guarantee you Ocho’s life after football will crush Randy and T.O.’s.
