Imagine if one of the NFL owners said, “I’m going to side with the players”. Or what if one of the players, agreed that the owners should cut their pay, and make them play 18 games. You’d think that both people lost their minds.
This is the exact same thing I was thinking when I found out about Ray Small, former Ohio State wide receiver(2006-2010) just telling more of Ohio State’s business. The Ohio State football program is about as lawless as Haiti, anything goes. Especially, when your head coach turns the blind eye to warnings and emails.
Small told the Ohio State student newspaper, The Lantern , several details of his illegal benefits while playing at Ohio State including selling his four Big Ten championship rings, other memorabilia, and getting special deals on cars while being a Buckeye.
Here are some quotes from Small’s interview,
“everyone was doing it on the team.”
“We had four Big Ten rings. There was enough to go around,”
“We have apartments, car notes,” he said. “So you got things like that and you look around and you’re like, ‘Well I got (four) of them, I can sell one or two and get some money to pay this rent.’ ”
“It was definitely the deals on the cars that were the biggest. I don’t see why it’s a big deal,”
“If you go in and try to get a tattoo, and somebody is like, ‘Do you want 50 percent off this tattoo?’ You’re going to say, ‘Heck yeah,’
“They explain the rules to you, but as a kid you’re not really listening to all of them rules,”
“You go out and you just, people show you so much love, you don’t even think about the rules. You’re just like, ‘Ah man, it’s cool.’ You take it, and next thing you know the NCAA is down your back.”
“Everywhere you go, while you’re in the process of playing at Ohio State,” Small said, “you’re going to get a deal every which way.”
I wish I could sit up and type that this is awful that all these Ohio State players are breaking the rules and they are being selfish, etc. But honestly, with what these players bring into the program, someone needs to figure out how to pay them. As long as these kids don’t receiver extra compensation, these kids are going to continue to break the rules.
What I don’t understand on Small’s part is why is he snitching? Is it because he was in Coach Tressel’s dog house much of his career. Maybe because he wasn’t drafted and because of the NFL lockout, he has yet to be signed to an NFL team? Either way, he’s hurting other Ohio State players and the program by brining this stuff to light. It’s cool for reporters, blogs, etc. to investigate because that’s their job. But this nigga is sitting up here, taking the illegal benefits, and then turning around and snitching on everyone else doing it. Not cool at all.
Accepting illegal benefits is not right, but just because Small accept benefits, doesn’t mean he has the right to tell on everyone else ACCEPTING the illegal benefits. Small is hurting his program by giving the NCAA more ammunition to give Ohio State the death penalty if they wanted too. Also, he’s hurting other players from getting those $100 dollar handshakes and deals. And let me just say this….out of the 100+ players scholarship and walk-on that played at Ohio State while Small was there, not all of them accepted illegal benefits. He’s implicated innocent people as well.
If he’s got such a big story, why tell the student paper? No offense to them, but why not hit up USA Today, AP, Big Lead Sports, Sports by Brooks, 6Magazine, hell the Cleveland Plain Dealer at least? It just goes to show a little bit about his intelligence. Thing big Ray, not Small.
Small has shitted his draws with Ohio State and its boosters. No jobs for Small like coaching, broadcast, or working for one of the booster’s businesses. He’s seen as a snitch amongst all Ohio State players former and current. So they’re not going to be checking for him if he ever needs help. If the kid was in and out of Tressel’s doghouse, I’m willing to bet he wasn’t a model student and probably didn’t graduate. And if he did, he hasn’t the slightest clue how to get a job with his degree.
Small didn’t just screw Ohio State and it’s current players….he screwed himself. Goodluck with that bruh.
