This is a Division that has two coaches, Bill Belichick and Rex Ryan that are almost more famous than the teams or even the stars that play for those teams. Belichick of Hoodie fame and Ryan of extreme foul mouth/foot fetish fame. The division isn’t without stars, Tom Brady, future hall of famer, is in the argument for G.O.A.T. LaDainian Tomlinson is a future Hall of Famer and for about 6-7 seasons he put up some of the greatest numbers in the league’s history. This division is interesting because it is very polarizing.
The Buffalo Bills are most famous for losing 4 Super Bowls in a row (’90 – ’93). To be honest, If I was a Bills fan, I would be pretty happy with that performance. Sure you want your team to win one but going to the Super Bowl 4 years in a row is a hell of an accomplishment. The problem is that was 17 years ago. QB play has been the biggest issue for Buffalo. They haven’t had a stable producing QB since Jim Kelly’s last season in ’96. Ok, Drew Bledsoe had a couple good years but nothing to write home about. The Bills’ starting QB for the ’11 Season will likely be Ryan Fitzpatrick. He is serviceable but not nearly skilled enough to push his team past the Pats or the Jets. Best bet for the Bills? Do your best to get the #1 pick overall in the 2012 NFL Draft and hope that Andrew Luck can revitalize your team.
The Miami Dolphins are an interesting story. They also suffer from erratic, non productive, and below average QB play. The Dolphins have yet to find a leader for the most important position on the field. Chad Henne does not seem to be the answer that the Dolphins are looking for. The wildcat has helped to take attention away from the poor QB play. The Dolphins have two backs that could go for 1000+ yards in any given season if they weren’t splitting time with each other, but both of those backs look like their on their way out of town. The strength of this team lies in the defense (ranked in the top 8 of both run and pass D). The biggest bright spot is Cameron Wake, an undrafted DE from Penn State, who looks like he could be a perennial All-Pro. Wake had 14 sacks last season and reminds me a little of DeMarcus Ware his first few years in the league. The guy is pretty much unblockable. It is nice to have a hell raising DE but unfortunately Miami is not going to matter until they can find a leader at the QB position.
The New England Patriots are, year in and year out, the standard by which other NFL teams are measured. There are a few teams that I would place into this lofty status: New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and now the new comer Green Bay. The Pats draft well, coach incredibly well, know how to add pieces that will help the team, and more importantly they win games. I understand they haven’t won the Super Bowl in a few years but every season they are on the short list to win it all. Why is that? What have I harped on about every team so far? QB play. Also, it doesn’t hurt that they have the strongest coach in all of football. I can pretty much find nothing bad to say about this organization. They build their team better than any other club out there. Danny Woodhead, who would have thought he could play in this league? I know he was cut by the Jets, but that further solidifies my point. Belichick saw something where other coaches/GMs didn’t. That, my friends, is why the Pats (love ‘em or hate ‘em) will be contenders until Tom Brady retires or the Hoodie moves on.
Rex Ryan and the New York Jets made a name for themselves during the most recent installment of HBO’s Hard Knocks. Rex is boisterous, yes. He gives fantastic interviews; I mean the guy is genuinely funny. He can be polarizing I will admit, but all in all I think he is great for the game. Then you have Mark Sanchez. I am not completely sold on him being a big time NFL QB. He is good. He is solid. He has managed to win a few games here and there. I just don’t know, he doesn’t have that “It” about him as far as I’m concerned. The thing about the Jets is they are good enough to make a run at a Super Bowl based pretty much on their defense. They throw the ball good enough on offense. They run the ball very well. If Sanchez can protect the ball a little better then I truly think they can make a run at an AFC title.
