ESPN is the Worldwide Leader in Sports hands down. I’m sorry but Fox Sports and Versus aren’t coming anywhere close to challenging the the sports network giant. Every team has stars and ESPN has several, two of which are Colin Cowherd and Bill Simmons.
Cowherd has the most listened to radio show on ESPN Radio, The Herd, which airs 10am – 1pm EST. He also has the highest rated show on ESPN 2, SportsNation, which airs 3pm EST.
Then there is Bill Simmons. His BS Report podcast is the most listened to podcast on the network. He is also widely read with his Page 2 column on ESPN.com. More importantly, he was the architect of the famous ESPN 30 for 30 series. Fucking genius and I’ll forever love him for that, might even name one of my cars after him. He also has the widely popular Sports site, Grantland.com.
Me and my cousin, Ed King, aka Young Edgerrin(@edking26), are avid fans of both Simmons and Cowherd. Young Edgerrin loves Bill Simmons and is so so on Cowherd. Myself on the other hand, loves Colin Cowherd to death. I respect Simmons but I’m riding with Colin.
Me and Ed were talking on AIM the other day and this little debate ensued….
Ed’s comments
Okay Boadu, here are five reasons why Simmons is better than Colin …..
1) Simmons relates pop culture to sports. So not only does he have sports heads listening in, but he can bring people in who are not big into sports….So larger demographics for my man Bill.
2) Does Colin even right columns?… He is not a better writer than Billy…I know that for a fact.
- I had to quickly interject to him “but Colin does pop culture stuff too”
- Of course Ed fires back “But no Colin doesnt write”
3) Colin is a one trick horse….He is cynical ALL the time…has no balance at all.
- chill brosef, you said 5 reasons why Bill is better than Colin…not a bash Colin session..that’s like my 14th cousin..relax!
4) I have watched the development of Bill and you can see the growth. He is strong in all areas of sports and his personality is so dynamic you will listen to him rant on sports like hockey, baseball and not care.
-Watched him develop? Who were you his podcast coach since 2006?
5) He has genius ideas. Who can have a podcast (legit podcast) with a segment where he calls his three best friends who are not in the media/journalism field and rant about sports? BILL SIMMONS that’s who..
- Ok, so have some perspective…what does Simmons not do so well?
(Ed begrudgingly responds after searching his biased brain for borderline faults in Simmons’ game)….Umm sometimes he can be a bit of a homer because he’s Boston born and raised. But he’s still awesome..he has season tickets to the Clippers so he’s not that biased.

That was the end of our conversation because Ed had a meeting at work to go to…but…let me talk about Cowherd.
He’s fun to listen to if that makes sense. When he’s not entertaining me, he’s offending me…but either way I’m listening to him. He’s compelling. It’s like listening to an awesome defense lawyer get his client off from going to jail for five years to walking the street wondering how the hell he’s free. Cowherd knows sports, but he doesn’t bore me with stats or game recaps. He relates his topics to real life things. I feel like I know him also, he’s opened up about his divorce, new marriage and his kids. Tell you the truth, I’ve learned valuable life lessons from Cowherd…real shit…
My issue with Simmons is that…I used to love him. I didn’t know someone could be so damn funny and talk sports at the same time. In college, I was almost fired about three times for being on ESPN and reading Simmons’ Page 2 column(had a job at the University of Oklahoma Burar’s office and being on the internet was a huge problem). The issue with Simmons arose when I heard him talk for the first time. I was hoodwinked and sucker punched. The man who was so funny on print was supposed to have the voice of a scruffy giant. Nope, he sounded like a stuffed up chipmunk. Not cool at all. And his podcasts feel too casual, it’s as if he’s talking around his points, where Colin is more definitive.
Either way…both are dope. They both make the network better. I just rock with Double C and Ed loves Stuffy Simmons.
