Forget yo rookie symposiumJune 30, 2011
The NFLPA rookie symposium was this week. It is similar to the NFL’s rookie symposium in May which was canceled because of the lockout. Either way, they drop knowledge on the rookies to help them prepare of the NFL life. You know….don’t blow your money, avoid hoes, don’t do drugs, work hard, etc. Normally all of the NFL rookies are required to attend, but since this isn’t an official NFL event, it wasn’t mandatory. Only 155 of the 224 drafted rookies showed up. One big name first rounder didn’t come, Tampa Bay Bucs rookie Adrian Clayborn selected 20th overall.
He didn’t show up because he chose to work out with his teammates instead. The Bucs players organized workouts this week and Clayborn opted to meet, bond, and workout with teammates instead. Clayborn’s reasoning made sense,
“I couldn’t do both and I decided it was more important to be with my teammates,” the Iowa University All-American said. “I am two months behind and I’ve got to find a way to catch up. I just wanted to be with my teammates and pick their brains.”
The honest truth most rookies that go to the symposium still go way to hard in the clubs and make stupid decisions. So if a player is just not mature enough to handle the NFL life, he probably never will be. Clayborn is already ready.
Although no one has been paid, most players have taken loans from their agents and are “living” the NFL life even though they haven’t received a paycheck yet. Clayborn is still driving his 2002 Pontiac Bonneville his mother bough him in high school five years ago.
“Look at my car,” says the 20th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, who turns 23 next week.
“I am still a broke college student still driving an old beat up car. I don’t have any money to take care of now, but I am not a real flashy guy anyway so it’s not a concern to me that I might to go out and blow it all.”
Clayborn wrecked last year at Iowa with 3.5 sacks, 7 tackles for loss finishing his career with 19 sacks and 37.5 tackles for loss and 7 forced fumbles. He definitely has a good head on his shoulder, and made a great decision opting to workout with teammates and get a jump on the other rookies who are already behind the curve.
That’s all I got,
