The Old Ball Coach wants to Pay upJune 3, 2011
Steve Spurrier, the legendary SEC coach and current South Carolina Gamecocks head coach has proposed a new idea. He says that he and several SEC coaches have agreed to pay their players $300 a game.
While not a formal proposal, Spurrier got the signed approval of six other SEC coaches who support an NCAA discussion on the idea.
Spurrier was quoted saying,
“A bunch of us coaches felt so strongly about it that we would be willing to pay it — 70 guys, 300 bucks a game,” Spurrier said. “That’s only $21,000 a game. I doubt it will get passed, but as coaches in the SEC, we make all the money — as do universities, television — and we need to get more to our players. We would like to make that happen. Probably won’t, but we’d love to do it.”
“I just wish there was a way to give our players a piece of the pie. It’s so huge right now. As you know, 50 years ago there wasn’t any kind of money and the players got full scholarships. Now, they’re still getting full scholarships and the money is in the millions. I don’t know how to get it done. Hopefully there’s a way to get our guys that play football a little piece of the pie.”
The idea is great but it has clear loop holes. You know the SEC is dirtier than a hotel x-rated film in Wyoming when it comes to recruiting practices. Who’s to say that certain coaches won’t pay more than $300 to kids or use that as recruiting bait. I can hear it now….”They’re only paying you $300 a game at South Carolina? Son come on over to Clemson, we’ll get you $800 a game.
Like I said it’s a good idea. I’m glad someone has spoken up for the players, but it clearly needs to be refined.
