Top 10 Black Sports PersonalitiesJune 20, 2011
Maybe about a month ago, Richard Boadu of 6Magazine was truly inspired when he was watching ESPN’s Around the Horn. Michael Smith, JA Adande, Kevin Blackistone, and Jemele Hill were all on the show. Four black sportswriters on the show at once. For a black writer, that was inspirational to see. Then he started thinking….who are the top 10 black sports personalities?
Young Rich couldn’t just come up with the list on his own so….So, he hit up the homies Eddie Maisonet (@EdtheSportsfan) and Kenny Masenda (@soulonice6) who run the popular website, EdTheSportsfan.com. And he also hit up my homies Nichols Accomp (@NicholsAccomp) and DragonflyJonez(@DragonflyJonez), the two hold it down at Absolut-ism.com (the site that brought you “Titties and Carrot Cake”).
Along with the 6Magazine crew (Richard Boadu and CJ Clayborne), the six writers banned together and formed a Wu-Tang/Odd Future-ish collab to compile the Top 10 Black Sports personalities in sports based on a ranking system they used. Of course, they also talked cash shit about each other’s individual list that you will enjoy as well.
10. Clark Kellogg – 9 points
“Special K” can walk it like he talks it, he scored 51 points and had 24 rebounds in his last game in high school, BEASTMODE. Kellogg plays horse with Obama ……. OBAMA nigga. Kellogg also is the voice of NBA 2k11 easily the best basketball video game of all time (add 300 cool points). As far as color commentary he blends his deep knowledge of the game with coon words that makes fun for my simple ass. – CJ Clayborne of 6Magazine
9. Jemele Hill – 12 points
The best thing about Jemele Hill is that I don’t feel like a person with boobies is talking to me when she discusses sports. She’s extremely logical, unlike most beings with boobies. And she knows what she’s talking about, again, unlike most beings with boobies. I would have no problem watching a playoff game with her… And that right there might be the most complimentary statement I have ever given a being with boobies. – Nichols Accomp of Absolut-ism.com

8. Jalen Rose – 15 points
Forgive me for resorting to an overused cliché, but the best thing about Jalen Rose is how he always keeps it real. From the moment he set foot in those baggy shorts and black socks in Ann Arbor twenty years ago he has always been unapologetically himself. He also knows his hoops. His insight on basketball is extensive and he’s not afraid to throw his opinion in when discussing it. -DragonflyJonez of Absolut-ism.com
7. Kenny Smith – 16 points
Inside the NBA is the best basketball show in the world, and part of the reason that’s the case is because of Kenny Smith. He, Ernie, and Sir Charles have the perfect chemistry and he’s counted on to bring wisdom to topics when Charles goes off the deep end. Despite the fact that he’s been hesitant to give up the “Jet” nickname to Jason Eugene Terry, he’s still one of the realest personalities we have in the media. – Kenny Masenda of Edthesportsfan.com
6. William C. Rhoden 21 points
William Rhoden is held in high regard by me, thanks to one of the most influential books in my life, 40 Million Dollar Slaves. If it’s not one of your favorite books of all-time, it’s either because you haven’t read it, or you just don’t know how to read. – Kenny Masenda of Edthesportsfan.com

5. Michael Smith – 24 points
In a time and a place where being light-skinneded can either be appreciated or slandered, the big homie Michael Smith has transcended from being a young high-yella dude who talked about Boston sports (the Globe) to a young high-yella dude who has found a way to be profound and keep it 100 at all times. I’ll admit that I see myself in the vision of Michael Smith for more than the light-skinnededness, but for the fact that he never has to compromise who he is and what he stands for in his writing or what he says. That’s something anyone can respect. – Eddie Maisonet of EdTheSportsfan.com
4. Bomani Jones – 25 points
Bomani Jones has what’s for my money, the best show in all of sports talk radio with The Morning Jones. He’s a stats machine, but not to where the point that it consumes him and he becomes a robot like some sports commentators. If you ever listened to his show or watched him on Around the Horn, you know that he’s more interested in the “human” component of sports. It’s not all box scores with him. He’s more concerned with the “whys” rather than the “hows”. And that is extremely refreshing. – DragonflyJonez of Absolut-ism.com

3. Charles Barkley – 40 points
Chuck doesn’t speak well, but has somehow finagled his way into getting paid to speak for a living. And everybody listens to him. How inspiring is that? Very inspiring in my opinion. Yes, he’d probably put his penis in your girlfriend. Which sucks, but he’ll tell you, and fight you about it….unlike Reggie Miller‘s punk ass. Fuck Reggie Miller. – Nichols Accomp of Absolut-ism.com

2. Stephen A. Smith – 43 points
Stephen is ugly as a Master P sneaker but you can’t deny his assention to the top tier of sports personalities. I often think of him as a dude Oprah or Barbara Walters, especially after watching his recent interview with Plaxico Burress. Why I really respect him is that he will ask the questions that you are thinking regardless of how they offend or how touchy the topic is. Smith doesn’t hold anything back he is #based as a journalist can come. RESPECT – CJ Clayborne of 6Magazine
1. Michael Wilbon – 45 points
Michael Wilbon has successfully parlayed living in two of the greatest cities (for both sports AND women) into now being the OG of OG’s in the sports world. From Chicago, to DC, from the Post to PTI to ESPN, the man has achieved the isomotion. What’s fascinating with Wilbon is the fact that there have been very few moments where I’d actually disagree with Wilbon. There isn’t another talking head in all of sports that doesn’t respect what Wilbon has to say, and for that he is the OG of OG’s of all the talking heads in sports. – Eddie Maisonet of EdTheSportsFan.com
And…..of course here comes the shit talk……
Richard Boadu’s list
1. Bomani Jones
2. Jemele Hill
3. Charles Barkley
4. Stephen A Smith
5. Jason Whitlock
6. Michael Smith
7. Chris Brossard
8. William C. Rhoden
9. Scoop Jackson
10. Tom Jackson
“This is why I hate Dick’s (Richard’s) list. William C. Rhoden and Tom Jackson. William C Rhoden is a legend. You have to respect the man. I mean, the guy writes for the New York Times. But I just viewed a YouTube video featuring him that had 26 views. 26 views. Nobody but Dick cares about what William C. Rhoden thinks. And let’s not forget Tom Jackson. Another very respectable human being. But he’s so brown. So brown, I can hardly take him serious. I didn’t realize how brown he was until I saw him in a brown suit. The man looked like a stack of brownies. Oh, how I love brownies. Brownies are delicious. Well made brownies are hard to find, but he makes me hungry for brownies. I can’t mess with Tom Jackson.” – Nichols Accomp of Absolut-ism.com
Nichols Accomp’s list
1. Charles Barkley
2. Michael Wilbon
3. Stephen A Smith
4. Magic Johnson
5. Michael Smith
6. Kenny Smith
7. Jalen Rose
8. Deion Sanders
9. Keyshawn Johnson
10. Michael Strahan
John’s list is pretty good, but I’m trying to figure out why he’s got Michael Strahan and Keyshawn Johnson on there. If it was strictly off of players who are in the media, I would get it, but I don’t watch Fox NFL Sunday for Strahan or Sunday NFL Countdown for Keyshawn. Besides, I was in Sundance Square (Fort Worth) for Super Bowl Sunday and was fly as hell in my suit, giving Keyshawn and Cris Carter a run for their money, but they said I couldn’t get on TV, because of my long goatee. Typical crazy talk from someone who doesn’t have a goatee like Keyshawn, or like the creator of this here list, John. – Kenny Masenda of EdThesportsfan.com
CJ Clayborne’s list
1. Stephen A. Smith
2. Clark Kellog
3. Jalen Rose
4. Charles Barkley
5. Michael Wilbon
6. Graham Watson
7. Bomani Jones
8. Stuart Scott
9. Deion Sanders
10. Michael Irvin
Okay, CJ’s list immediately lets me know that he likes his sports personalities with a sharp tongue and a brash/assertive style. I mean good grief, Stephen A., Jalen, Barkley, Bomani, Deion, and Irvin? As my mama would say, “them boys shole can talk!” One person that I think should get major spotlight is the homie Graham Watson. I first got hip to Graham when she was covering the mid-majors of college football and basketball for ESPN. Clever, witty, and also armed with a sharp tongue like her colleague’s on CJ’s list she’s always been quick with the insight. Now she’s a lead dog over at Yahoo! Sports covering the same sports and she definitely deserves your attention, check her out. – Eddie Maisonet of EdTheSportsFan.com
Dragonfly Jonez’s list
1. Wilbon
2. Chuck
3. Bo
4. Michael Smith
5. Kenny Smith
6. Gus Johnson
7. Stephen A
8. Jalen
9. Broussard
10. Jemele
In regards to DragonflyJonez, your namesake always wore an ass whooping like a 1987 pair of Wranglers and you need that same ass whooping for this horrible ass list. Especially Jemele Hill. I also don’t fuck with people that fuck with journalistic soul sellers. I suggest you practice your art or you will stay in the dark! – CJ Clayborne of 6Magazine
Kenny Masenda’s list
Mike Wilbon
William C. Rhoden
James Brown
Stephen A.
Sir Charles
Kenny Smith
Pam Oliver
Lisa Salters
Gus Johnson
Michael Smith
I’m really giving Kenny’s list the same look I gave to 50 cent’s new hairstyle. (What the hell is this) The top half of Kenny’s list is straight but the bottom though……How does Pam Oliver make the list? She gives me nothing informative and Lisa Salters just look good. I feel like Kenny is subliminally tryna holla. – Richard Boadu of 6Magazine
Eddie Maisonet’s list
1. Michael Wilbon
2. William C. Rhoden
3. Jason Whitlock
4. Stephen A. Smith
5. JA Adande
6. Scoop Jackson
7. Michael Smith
8. Bomani Jones
9. Jemele Hill
10. Jim Trotter
I only really have two gripes with Ed’s list. Jason Whitlock and JA Adande. Whitlock in my opinion is a shock journalist. He speaks the truth sometimes, and when he does it’s profound. But when he’s off, he’s REALLY off. There’s no middle ground with that guy. And JA Adande is one of the most boring sports personalities out. He’s like the plain bologna sandwich of sports personalities. – DragonflyJonez of Absolut-ism.com
