Let’s forget for a second about the lashing that James Harrison gave Roger Goodell, Brian Cushing, and just about everybody in the NFL except himself.
By far the most damaging things he said will hurt his own team.
If Harrison is half the NFL scholar he clearly thinks himself to be, then he well knows the name and story of Mike Vanderjagt. And if James Harrison had acted with the responsibility that comes with being an elder statesmen on a perennial contender, then he should have thought long and hard about the legendary ‘drunk kicker’ before he decided to rip his quarterback and running back in a national magazine interview.
That’s not to say that, like Vanderjagt, Harrison’s career will soon tailspin and that No. 92 will be out of the league in two years. But it is to say that there are similarities. Like Vanderjagt, Harrison is now just over the far side of his peak as a professional football player, and like Vanderjagt, Harrison has recently experienced a frustrating end to his postseason.
But Vanderjagt was never a team leader. Harrison is. And Vanderjagt never won a Super Bowl with the quarterback he threw under the bus – Harrison has won two. Of course, Harrison’s points are not without merit (at least regarding Ben Roethlisberger; the stats don’t backup his trashing of Reshard Mendenhall). Big Ben is not Peyton Manning; he’s a scrappy player who is usually at his best in the postseason, but wasn’t last year. And the Steelers are most definitely as good as they are because of the defense, not the offense.
But even though Big Ben doesn’t have the same respect in his locker room as Peyton Manning did (and does), and even though Big Ben won’t win Man of the Year anytime soon, Harrison – as a veteran team leader – would be wise to recognize that No. 7 is the Steelers quarterback now and for the foreseeable future, and the last thing a team fresh off a Super Bowl loss needs is to have a rift between its stars. Even Mike Vanderjagt knows that.
