What Did Cam Newton Do?July 27, 2011

I honestly remain baffled by the Cam Newton doubt. Last year during what can only be described as an amazing run by Cam Newton at Auburn I was surprised by the number of doubters Newton had. Of course he had his trouble’s at Florida and there were questions about his recruitment but those incidents didn’t seem to fall into the range of the wholly unacceptable because we’ve seen worse from less talented players where they were forgiven. As Newton went through the season and just kept winning despite the negativity that only intensified as the season wore on I took it as proof positive that Newton’s dedication to the gridiron had more than proven itself. He succeeded in a toxic atmosphere that would have caused many Quarterbacks to wilt. His critics however are far from satisfied and I’m starting to think we’ve been watching two different players. Watching coverage as the season jump starts I see Eric Davis among others questioning Cam Newton’s commitment to the game due to … what exactly? An answer given to Peter King in reply to a leading question that he decided to release without context? This is how the sports media works valuing their own gut feelings or insider shop talk despite the results on the field. I watched a Quarterback who led the Auburn Tigers to an undefeated season in the SEC on his way to a national title while being one of the most controversial figures in sports and everyone else just saw a kid who wasn’t as dedicated as Tim Tebow. We’ll see which interpretation prevails as the real work of the NFL begins but still I remained baffled by the fact that Newton’s potential is questioned by his supposed lack of dedication when the results on every field he’s been on so far shows it shouldn’t.

Comments are more than welcome.
