Did the Eagles just win the Super Bowl?August 1, 2011

Let’s be honest the lockout sucked, but I have to admit I love the fast paced information packed last ten days that we have been able to experience. I mean it almost makes me wish for a week of free agency every year…ok ok, not quite but almost. There was just something about waking up every morning and turning on Sportscenter to see what free agent landed where. The bad part, I guess, is that it will be really tough to remember what players are on what teams. If you can’t remember where a player is playing just guess the New York Jets or the Philadelphia Eagles and you will probably be right.

I made the comment, several times, that “Mike Vick will never play QB again in the NFL” upon his release from jail. I was convinced that his days as a signal caller were over. I figured some team would give him a shot and he would play WR or some form of a Wildcat type offense. I never believed that he would start at QB much less have the success that he enjoyed as a starter last season. It appears that I underestimated Mr. Vick. The guy did nothing but impress me last year. Ok, so the Eagles didn’t make the Super Bowl. I would venture to say that Philadelphia was able to exceed pretty much everyone’s expectations en route to a 10-6 season. That was with two tough losses at the end of the season and an a playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl Champs. Yeah, the Eagles did pretty well last season.

So what’s next? Well, I was nervous for the Eagles when all the talk of trading Kevin Kolb started to surface. My fear was that it is really tough for Vick to make it through an entire season with the way he scrambles, and the amount of times he puts his body at risk. I thought the perfect security blanket would be having Kolb waiting in the wings for the inevitable 2-3 games where #7 couldn’t go. Then Kolb is shipped to Arizona for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. I immediately started thinking; hmmm DRC along with Asante Samuel? That could be quite a duo…if only I knew what was yet to come.

The biggest domino fell on Friday when Nnamdi Asomugha agreed to terms with the Eagles. I read this on Friday and all I could think was “what the…” I mean I had no idea that Philly was even in the picture. I kept hearing the Jets and the Texans, and then the Texans went with Johnathan Joseph all but eliminating them from the Nnamdi sweepstakes. I guess I just assumed that it was a done deal for Nnamdi to join team Rex Ryan. Well, as always, you know what happens when you assume right? Yeah, the Eagles swoop in and flip the entire free agent world on its ear.

I guess it wasn’t enough for Philly to add one Pro Bowl CB in DRC, but they just figured why not add the best shut down CB in the game, no big deal. The Eagles also addressed the void left when Kolb was dealt to Arizona. They signed Vince Young. I can honestly say that this is the only move that I didn’t really approve of but I guess the think tank at Philadelphia headquarters sees VY as a poor man’s Mike Vick…a very poor man…a bum that lives under a bridge version of Vick is more accurate. I can’t knock them for filling a need, I just think they could have done so with a QB that has a few less mental issues and one who doesn’t enjoy mixing it up at gentlemen’s clubs.

Did Philly win the Super Bowl this weekend? This assumption may be a bit premature. There are still 16 regular season games to go and a grueling playoff season as well. Did they win the Super Bowl this weekend? No, but they damn sure made the NFC a two team race in my opinion. Watch out Packers, here comes some Brotherly Love.
