The latest blockbuster allegations in college football have fallen directly on sunny Miami Beach, Florida. Former University of Miami booster Nevin Shapiro gabbed alleged to Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson that he gave hundreds of thousands in impermissible benefits to Miami athletes from 2002 to 2010. Tremors from this fallout would be widespread.
Former Canes from Tyrone Moss, Vincent Wilfork to current Canes Oliver Vernon and Ray Ray Armstrong and even former Canes coaches now at Alabama, Louisville, and Florida are implicated. University of Miami President Donna Shalala is even pictured with Shapiro donating a 50K check to the U.
While it does look bad for the school, I think it’s time for a change in college athletics. NCAA athletes don’t have time to work and they don’t get paid but the NCAA directly slaps harsh penalties on players and schools that get caught. How many times does this have to happen for us to make a change? Who will be next? Texas, Oregon, Ole Miss? Until you change the rules every single school to a man will be guilty whether they get caught or not.
There is so much vile stuff going on in college football that the game has been cheapened tremendously. Miami is wrong and will pay dearly — possibly even get the death penalty but wrong is wrong. I think it’s high time we pointed the finger at the real villain the NCAA.
