NO SEC for Texas A & MAugust 15, 2011

Over the last week or so there have been some serious rumblings about a Texas A&M defection from the Big 12 and joining the SEC. Many people were for this happening. Many people were against it. Some blamed it on chasing money. Some blamed it on the Longhorn Network. I guess it doesn’t really matter now, but it got me thinking. How would this have affected the game that I love? How would the landscape of sports been different if A&M had in fact succeeded in seceding?
Imagine A&M as a part of the SEC. I honestly think that the Aggs would fit in remarkably with the rest of the SEC. They have a massive student body with over 45k. They have an insanely rabid fan base. I mean this would not be a step down from night games at Death Valley, the Iron Bowl, or the World’s Largest Cocktail Party. If you haven’t been to a game at Kyle Field then you are truly missing out on one of the great football venues in the entire country.
Every home game there are 85,000 fans screaming different yells and chants in unison. The students have this thing called Midnight Yell. It is a sort of pep rally that occurs the night before the games at, you guessed it, Midnight. The student body gathers and gets jacked up for the game the following day. If you go to this shindig you bring a date or if you are single you bring a lighter and at the end of the Midnight Yell the lights of the stadium are turned out and you get to mug down with your date or if you are single you find another special someone with a lighter to mug down with. Is that great or what? Did I mention during the actual game you get to kiss your date when the Aggies score? That’s right, they score you score. Does it get better than that? The Aggies have more traditions and rituals than a Catholic mass and each has a very important role in making game days in College Station special.
All of that is fine and dandy but how would A&M changing conferences help college football. One word…PLAYOFFS!! Ok, hear me out. I know it may sound strange but I truly believe that A&M (or someone like A&M) moving to a major conference is one step close to getting everyone what they want, playoffs. Say, for lack of arguing, that A&M joined the SEC and would be a member starting in the 2012 season. The SEC would then have 13 teams and would most likely add another team to make an even 14. The word on the street was the potential 14th team could have been Clemson, Mizzou, or Florida St. or maybe even another team from anyone of a number of conferences. Adding any of these teams and A&M to the SEC would create the NCAA’s first super conference while also effectively dismantling the Big 12. A&M would have been the first domino to fall that would have ultimately spelled the end of the Big 12 and the potential creation of multiple “super conferences”. The Pac 12, the Big 10 (or whatever they will be called), the Big East and the SEC are the four conferences in my mind that would absorb the remainder of schools from the Big 12 and ACC in order to create 4 16-team conferences. With these conferences in place there would be a clear cut path to playoffs. Each major conference could get 2 automatic bids and then there would be 8 at large bids. This would give you 16 teams for a fantastic playoff system.
I guess it doesn’t really matter now. I mean the SEC said thanks but no thanks to A&M. No other dominoes fell. The status quo is maintained, for now. And we get to experience another year of the idiotic bowl system that we are currently stuck with. I have to admit I was a little excited when I thought the Aggies were going to bail on the Big 12. I had visions of playoff games running through my little mind. I mean can you blame me? But again what are we talking about? Cue the Jim Mora clip.
