Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan Keep it RealAugust 8, 2011

Two names: Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan, those are two guys that are as polarizing as any two names in the NFL. They have got to be up there with Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocinco, Bill Belichick, and Jerry Jones. You can pretty much throw any of those names out at your local water cooler or adult beverage establishment and you will probably receive some serious venom or enormous love.
I have to admit I was not a big Rex Ryan fan until watching him in last year’s “Hard Knocks”. The guy is passionate and you never have to wonder where he stands on an issue. I love that about him. I mean in this day and age of our athletes, media, and everyone for that matter being insanely P.C. it is nice to see someone say what is on his mind and not be worried about the repercussions.
I guess the beauty (or the downside, depending on your stance) of having Rex around is that there are two of him. Rob Ryan, Rex’s twin, is the defensive coordinator for America’s team, the Dallas Cowboys, and here lately has proved that he doesn’t mind shooting his mouth off a little bit. I like it. Now, I do wish that he had actually accomplished something in his career other than being a coordinator, but I guess being known for having a big mouth isn’t all that bad. The guy looks like he might be more comfortable at a Grateful Dead concert rather than putting a scheme together to try and stop his foes in the NFC East. But I think I kind of like the fact that he doesn’t look or sound like every other cliché driven coach out there.
The biggest fan of Rob Ryan giving more sound bites than Mike Tyson is ,undoubtedly, Jason Garrett. I’m sure in his mind it is completely fine for Ryan to continue lobbing trash talk at anyone who will listen as long as it keeps pressure off of his first year as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. There is nothing like a loud mouth assistant coach to keep the pressure off you being a first time coach of perhaps the most scrutinized time in the NFL.
The beauty of the Ryan’s is that they truly don’t care what people think and if you ask them a question you will get an honest answer. I think it’d be nice if we had more people in the public spotlight who were as forthright as the Brothers Ryan. Rob has ridiculously long hair and looks like someone that might be hanging out under a bridge near my house but the guy is a hell of a game planner and when it comes to coaches he has that “it” factor. The guy is charismatic, he’s funny, he is a great defensive mind and more importantly his players will run through a brick wall for him. To me there isn’t a higher compliment that you can pay to a coach other than his players love him. I think Rob will have a very successful season in Dallas and will parlay that success into a head coach job somewhere.
Rex has a smaller waist line due to a necessary surgery. He has a plethora of wigs and anecdotes used during press conferences. He has a foot fetish that was embarrassingly leaked to the entire known world. But the guy takes it in stride and if nothing else he makes me laugh. He and his brother have the same “it” factor. Rex’s players love him and play hard every play for their coach. Some people think that since the players are paid millions of dollars that they shouldn’t need motivation but trust me it is paramount for the players to buy in to who the coach is and what he stands for.
The Ryans upset too many people to win any popularity contest, but I don’t think the NFL would be the same without them. So get used to Rex and Rob trying to outdo each other with trash talk and bravado. I mean try to enjoy it. These guys, if nothing else, are great entertainment.
