The Journey: Inside Al Davis’ office during the 2011 NFL Supplemental DraftAugust 23, 2011
This post has been inspired by Gonzo journalism and fictitious tales.
So I had the pleasure of spending the day with Oakland Raiders owner, Al Davis, yesterday. Lucky me right? I decided to head west and chill with Davis once I saw that Terrelle Pryor ran a 4.36 40 yard dash, because you know Davis loves speed without substance. And, he was the only possible owner that would take Pryor with a high pick in the NFL Supplemental draft. Heck, I figured even if the Raiders didn’t nab up Pryor I’d get to chill with Al freaking Davis!
So I got to Oakland early yesterday morning around 8am PST. The Raiders facilities look more like San Quentin State Prison and that’s just the way Al Davis likes it. When I walked into Al’s office he greeted me a demand to take out his trash, which was JaMarcus Russell sleep on Al’s office couch. There were like four empty styrofoam cups in front of Russell too. I wasn’t sure if Davis was joking or what, and then he looked at me and said go on…”Get rid of ‘em”.
I nudged Russell a few times, but he wouldn’t budge. He was sleep like a baby. Hell, I would be too if I made $39 million. I hit ‘em one more time and he finally got up and left, but not before putting up a fight for the #2 Raiders’ jersey that he was rocking. It was a size XXXL and still didn’t fit.
To be honest, I had a tape recorder to see if I could get some good quotes from Al, but I couldn’t understand a word he said. What I could make out was the he was going to pick Terrelle Pryor, the disgraced Ohio State Buckeye quarterback in the 1st round of the 2011 NFL Supplemental draft. The Raiders, Director of Pro Player Personel, Keith Rowen was in the room when Al made this statement. I could tell Rowen’s job was to protect Davis from Davis.
Once the draft began, Davis was waiting for the Raiders’ pick. When they were two picks away, Rowen jumps up, runs to the window, points and yells, “Al…Lane Kiffin is on the premises!”
Faster than Darius Heyward-Bey can drop a screen pass, Al Davis was out of the office, with spiked Raider shoulder pads and all. But before he left, he stopped dead center in front of a framed Lane Kiffin picture in the middle of his office and pounded the framed and said, “The time is now punk!”
I ran to the window and didn’t see what the hell Rowen was talking about. As soon as I turned around he was on the phone with the NFL and said the Raiders would not be selecting any players in the first round. Now the Raiders did not have a second round pick, so Rowen and I spent that time watching Davis stalk the premises looking for Kiffin.
He came back into the office claiming he had the weasel in his grasps only to realize it was a water boy. He was not to pleased with Rowen for not selecting Pryor in the 1st round. As soon as the 3rd round came, Davis was there and proudly proclaimed the Raiders were back as he selected Pryor. Rowen cringed and Davis fist pumped like Pauly D.
