Total Quarterback Rating by ESPNAugust 6, 2011

The current QB rating system was established in 1973. How many things made in 1973 that have not been modified, renovated or totally overhauled are still working properly today? Not many huh..didn’t think so. As with the with current QB rating system it’s time for an overhaul. Simply because it’s outdated.

The current system takes completions, passing yards, touchdown passes and interceptions, all on a per-attempt basis, compares each to a league-average figure, and mashes them into one number. But it doesn’t weigh its categories by their importance to winning football games. It’s nothing more than a simple average, which tends to score in favor of QBs who complete a lot of short passes, driving up completion percentage without necessarily generating more yards or points. Oh yeah, and the average in which the the stats are compared it against…wait for it…the 1970s QB stats. The game has changed immensely since then.

This new system, called Total Quarterback Rating, developed by ESPN rates the same categories the old system does but also incorporates rushing stats, weighs importance on when plays are made, and how much the QB helps the team win or lost. You’re going to get more points if you complete a 5 yard pass for a first down in the last two minutes of a close game than if you complete a 50 yard pass in a blowout. The new system also is simple, because it’s on a 0-100 scale.

The new system is better, plain and simple. It’s about time the Quarterback Rating system was overhauled. Enjoy the new car smell.
