Notre Dame Overrated? Yeah, againSeptember 13, 2011

As usual Notre Dame started the season off ranked in the top 25 (#16) and as usual Notre Dame was stupidly overrated. The Irish has come out of the gates pretty much the same way every other Golden Dome team has in the last 20 years, awfully.
They’ve put up tons of yards in both games, but 9 turnovers have killed any chances that they could have of holding onto victory. 9 turnovers in 2 games! There are not many, if any, teams that can win with 9 turnovers in 2 games. I will admit the game against Michigan was an absolute blast to watch. The game featured 21 points in the last minute and some seconds? Yeah, it was nuts. That doesn’t hide the fact that ND has managed to start off with two losses in games where they were superior in every way except on the scoreboard. Believe me it is not smooth sailing from here on out either. The Irish play #15, Michigan State, next and then have games against Stanford (#6), USC, Boston College, and Pittsburgh. It could get ugly for the Irish this year. I’m thinking 5-7 or 6-6.
Do the members of the media have any shame? I mean, you rank ND in the top 25 year after year and when was the last time they had a good team? Was it the year of the “Bush Push”? That squad was pretty talented, and yeah I guess one good team every 20 years is a good reason to be grossly overrated. I can’t explain the reason why Notre Dame gets ranked every year, but I can lend some logic as to why I think they will never be a team that has national significance ever again.
I think that everyone is quick to blame the academics. The academic standards are definitely an obstacle, but there are many highly thought of institutions of higher learning that can also manage to field a solid football team more than once every two decades. One of the deterrents for young student athletes could be location, location, location. They majority of the top flight high school football talent resides in the southern half of the United States (Florida, Texas, and California). I would guess that kids from Miami, Dallas, and Los Angeles don’t want to play football in the snow. I’m not a big snow guy so maybe that’s just me. Notre Dame used to always hang its hat on “every one of our games is on T.V.” Yeah well guess what? This is 2011 and everybody who is anybody plays every game on T.V. Nice try. This is one of my favorites, “Well, Notre Dame is one of the most storied and tradition rich programs of all time”. Do you realize that high school seniors have no idea who Knute Rockne, Johnny Lujack, John Lattner, or Paul Hornung are? They have grown up hearing names like Reggie Bush, Sam Bradford, Vince Young, and Tim Tebow. The “tradition” of Notre Dame is about as useful as dial up internet.
I really think that the only remedy for this disastrous situation is to completely do away with preseason rankings. The rankings should come out after the first weekend in October. That way you have about 4 games for every team and by then Notre Dame will be 2-2 or 1-3 and not even the staunchest of homers could put them in the top 25. I know it seems elementary, but for some of the media types who get to vote on these things you have to use small words and explain things very thoroughly.
