Surprise Surprise, We are 2-0.
All but one game of week 2 are in the books and there are already some great surprises. I have to admit, on an individual level, the biggest surprise to me has been the play of Cam Newton. I was one of the first to say “this guys is a bust, this guy will never be a good NFL QB…blah blah blah”. Well it’s early but man this guy looks like the real deal. I mean he’s thrown some picks, but he has thrown some great passes and seems to be making good decisions and if he can continue to not immediately look to run then I think he could really shock some people.
Now let’s talk about the teams that have surprised some people to be 2-0.
I was really sure that an NFC East team would start the season 2-0 but I had no idea it would be the Washington Redskins. I think the thing that has shocked me the most is the play of Rex Grossman. In my opinion, if you have Rex as your starting QB then you are looking forward to a 7-9 or 8-8 type of season. The early indication is that Rex is managing the game and making some key throws in key situations. He has thrown 2 picks in the first two games and he has benefited from the D keeping him in it for the most part right to the seconds. Roy Helu looks pretty legit as a guy who can share some carries with Tim Hightower and might even be the feature back as the season goes on. On the defensive side, Ryan Kerrigan is another rookie that has looked impressive and can add some much needed youth to a more veteran unit.
The Detroit Lions are a team that I predicted was on the rise, but I don’t think I expected this. They just threw 48 points up on a Kansas City team that won 10 games last season and went to the playoffs. KC looked extremely overmatched. You rarely see an NFL team look that bad or maybe the Lions are looking that good? Detroit has an awesome nucleus of young talent. Matt Stafford can be a top 10 QB in this league, IF he can stay healthy. He has Megatron on his team (Calvin Johnson) and one the better young TEs in the league in Brandon Pettigrew. Jahvid Best probably won’t be an every down back, but that position is extinct anyways. The D is what has really impressed with me Detroit. Suh is Suh. He is a freak. He is Reggie White. I mean I haven’t seen a DT that impressive since Warren Sapp. He is an absolute game changer. Just wait til Nick Fairley is healthy and lining up right next to the man named Suh. I am calling it now. Detroit goes to the playoffs this year. They are a stock that I would buy for the next 5-7 years. Look out Packers.
You might laugh, but I think the AFC East is the most interesting division in the league. Ok, yeah the Pats and the Jets are 2-0 so that’s no big deal. But so are the Bills? They beat the hell out of the Chiefs in week 1, but so did the Lions in week 2 so maybe that is a KC problem. Either way, week 2 came and the Bills rallied around Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick and won a shootout over Oakland. Fred Jackson is running wild. Stevie Johnson looks like a for real #1 reciever. And don’t forget about the Harvard guy. Through two games Fitzpatrick has 7 TDs and 1 int?? Wow. The guy has been unconscious. I had to pull him off the bench of my fantasy team for week two and he has made me a believer. Ok, Ok it’s the Bills don’t get too carried away. I like that he is a smart QB (legit smart, the guy scored 48 out of 50 on the pre-draft Wonderlic test) and that he (cliché warning) let’s the game come to him. If he can continue to manage the game and they can lean on Jackson and C.J. Spiller to grind out the tough yards when the cold weather arrives, we could be looking at a very interesting AFC East race.
