As we sit through the halfway point of the college football season, it is time to sit back and look at what has unfolded so far. Let’s look at both the good, bad, and ugly that has happened so far.
The Good: How about those Tigers from Clemson? Dabo Swinney came into this season with rumors of him being on the hot seat, but the only thing hot right now is his Clemson team who is undefeated. Clemson has taken down three top-20 programs this season and has cracked the top 10. They have a big game in Atlanta, Georgia that will seal their fate but they could run the table (barring injuries). Then again this is the ACC we are talking about here, right?
Next feel good team is Kansas State. I don’t know how many people thought that they would still be 5-0 after their scare against Eastern Kentucky, but they have done it. They are still underrated by many and we won’t know how real they are until the stretch of games against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas A & M. I don’t think they can pass that test series, but they have had a great start. My last good has to be one player, Robert Griffin III aka RG3. He is my mid-season Heisman winner with completing 80% of his passes (until last week he had more touchdowns than incompletions). He is No. 2 nationally in pass efficiency with a 212.9 rating with 19 touchdowns and just 1 interception. I really hope he can keep this individual performance the rest of the season.
The Bad: Arizona is up first due to the 1-5 record that they have which has led to Mike Stoops’ firing. I did not expect ‘Zona to be undefeated with games against Stanford, Oklahoma State, and Oregon. I did however expect them to be 3-3 at best especially when you have back one of the best quarterbacks in Nick Foles and some talented receivers. The Wildcats were heading in the right direction when they started 7-1 last season but losing 5 straight (to the same opponents that you lost to this season) doesn’t help. Next up is Memphis AD R.C. Johnson whose claim is that they “deserves to be in the SEC”. You are 1-5 and cannot win Conference USA, must I say anymore? Last, but not least, is the former QB of the South Carolina Gamecocks, Stephen Glenn Garcia, who was relieved of his football duty. Garcia was suspended FIVE times by the school. I don’t know how many chances you deserve before you get the picture, but let’s just hope for his sake that he got it.
The Ugly: The ugly for the season has to go to the state of Florida. Of course, the big 3 of Florida all looked great early. Miami (2-3) was coming off a win against Ohio State, Florida State (even with the lost to OU) still looked like a 1-loss BCS team, and Florida (4-2) looked like a team revived under Charlie Weis and Will Muschamp. A few weeks later, Florida gets demolished against the big boys of the SEC, Florida State is on a three game losing streak, and Miami cannot finish a game. FSU has been the ugliest, after they had dreams of a BCS national championship. That has quickly faded and turned into a nightmare as they are scrambling to get out of the 2-3 (0-2) hole that they find themselves in. All of these teams could turn it around or continue on this spiral downfall stay tuned in to find out.
