Gator Green Mile: Florida’s October SlateOctober 1, 2011
Tonight at the Swamp, the Florida Gators begin a pseudo Custer’s Last Stand in what amounts to a death sentence in the SEC. To make matters worse only one game is at home and the rest are on the road or neutral sites. The Gators have a chance to vault directly into the #1 spot with a sweep but will more than likely get swept under the rug.
Tonight they get #3 ranked Alabama led by Nick Saban and that vaunted 3-4 defense that has given them fits as of late.
October 8 – Road game in Death Valley against LSU led by an absolutely nasty defense and a great smash mouth running game.
October 15 – They visit defending national champion Auburn, who as I type is giving #10 South Carolina fits on the road.
October 29 – The Gators head to Jacksonville to face a fast improving Georgia in a rivalry game.
The front seven for Florida is equal to the best in the country and that will keep them in these games. Football is a war of attrition and I don’t know how they could come out of this brutal stretch unscathed. I hate to say it, but if the secondary was stronger I could see this happening but without Janoris Jenkins and Will Hill leaving early. I just don’t think that back end of the defense will hold up.
I am really impressed with the Gator defensive line. Powell, Easley, Floyd, and Howard are as talented a unit as anybody has in the country. I think they give John Bostic and Jelani Jenkins at linebacker a chance to run free and really dominate up front. That gives Florida a chance in all four games, but I don’t think the Philadelphia Eagles could get through four straight games with competition of this magnitude. However, the Gators have the talent on defense and if the offense can be multiple and keep opposing defenses off balance with a steady run game they have the speed to burn anybody. October is the Gator Green Mile but they have a chance to do something special if they can shock the world.
