Raiders Get Great “Deal” with Carson PalmerOctober 19, 2011

Just when I thought the Oakland Raiders were about to pull out of their slump and nearly decade long suckdom and actually matter they go and do something like this, and no they don’t “totally redeem themselves”. You obviously can’t blame Al Davis on this one (rest in peace). I mean he has been the easy scapegoat over the lifetime of the Raiders organization but you can’t blame Al on the latest blunder out of the Silver and Black.
Who is to blame? I don’t know if you can blame one person. I don’t think it is one person in general but just the Raiders themselves. I mean what are they doing? They have basically leveraged their future on the hopes of 32 year old Richard Seymour, unproven troubled rookie QB Terrelle Pryor, and now the latest in a LONG line of miscues the trade for a “retired” QB who hasn’t even played this season: Carson Palmer.
Jason Campbell is done for the year and the Raiders have sent two picks to Cincinnati for Palmer. One is a first rounder and one is a conditional second rounder that could be a first rounder. TWO first round picks!!?!? Are you kidding me? Wait wait, your use of next year’s 3rd rounder on Pryor wasn’t enough? You wanted to also spend your first rounder next year and possibly your first rounder in 2013 on a 31 year old Retired QB??? I get the guy is a quality NFL starter and he really needs a change of scenery. He was an NFL MVP in ’06 and a two-time Pro Bowler, I understand that. But are you just covering up a mistake with more mistakes? I heard this news and just had to shake my head.
The curious part about this whole scenario is that the Raiders have a nice squad this year. They are 4-2 and getting ready to play the floundering Chiefs in Oakland. Oakland is 2nd in the entire league in rushing, but they are in the bottom third in passing offense. Campbell has been a serviceable starter this season. When he went down Oakland got frantic and honestly it looks like they got played by the Bengals.
The Bengals have said all along that they would not give in and trade Palmer. I guess it is easy to reconsider that statement when some team throws two future first rounders at you. On one hand you have the potential of “striking while the iron is hot” and getting a real NFL QB that can help win some games with the already dynamic ground game. On the other hand you have pretty much no hope of adding anyone after this season. I just don’t like the idea of eliminating your growth by way of the draft in the future in order to take a chance on a guy who hasn’t played at an elite level since 2006.
I suppose that when Kyle Boller is your only alternative you have to get a little creative but I just don’t see this going well for the Raiders. I guess they assume that their team is solid and doesn’t need any improvement in the draft. I can see that. I mean they are one of the worst teams against the pass and have been gashed against the run but yeah I’d go ahead and throw all of my eggs into that Nnmadi Asomughaless defense and not look to improve. Good decision.
