Regis and Gholson vs The WorldOctober 20, 2011
William Gholson (Michigan State) and Micanor Regis (Miami) have been suspended this week for throwing punches on the field last week in their respective games. I have already stood up for the Honey Badger at LSU today so why no go out on a limb for the gangsters of College Football. I am talking about the defense, especially the front seven.
Players like Vontaze Burfict Gholson, and Regis are all front seven players who have received a bad wrap. In all honesty I really and truly believe Gholson’s suspension is really more related to what he did to Denard Robinson Saturday that throwing a punch. I know some war veteran might throw up his cream of wheat reading this but football is war plain and simple, us versus them till we die or the clock runs out. Defense is about mentality, aggression and physicality there is a specific reason the majority of defensive players find their way to that side of the ball: Attitude plain and simple. Defense is born in you its the personification of the ALPHA MALE that has always been there.
I hate to see these after the fact MUMBO JUMBO absurd suspensions come into the play AFTER THE GAME IS OVER? I understand where teams and conferences are coming from: they want to put a classy, entertaining and fast paced product on the field and the television sets. This is the football equilivent of getting one of those camera tickets in the mail and I know none of you like that at all. I just think that as NASTY as this game is in real life if you don’t catch something until Monday or Tuesday on film let it go. The estrogen-ification of football gets on my nerves daily and although it usually revolves around Roger Goodell, the universities are pissing me off this time.
Class does not exist along the defensive front its a nasty evil rancid hell hole where most people that love the sport would not survive for five minutes. That being said you punish aggression, that you recruited so hard to get and that you so admire because now its on ESPN or some old commentator that still wishes milk was delivered every day in the glass bottle doesn’t approve of. I promise you that for the most part every punch doled out is in retaliation for something that happened to the player previously.
Unless you are going to scan every second of every game for such violations then stop nit picking at the players who make the boldest errors. However, if you looked deeply at every game you wouldn’t have any players left to play the games each Saturday. This is football not ballet for the last time so please do us all a favor and go back to policing things that we can control like extra benefits or synthetic weed because this is just preposterous. S/O to Gholson and Regis because they may not be right but at least they keep it real in front of the whole damn country ask yourself if you do that in your everyday life?
